Twitter’s all-new iPhone app: Revamped UI, new Connect menu, snappier

Today, Twitter announced an all new online version of Twitter, and to complement this new site, the popular micro blogging service launched a re-designed iPhone application. The new application features an all new user-interface and it looks awesome. The new app has four tabs across the bottom: Home, Connect, Discover, and Me, detailed below the fold.

Home: The Home section of the application includes your Twitter timeline. This timeline shows all the tweets of people you follow and also has a button on the top right to quickly send off a tweet. The interface for individual tweets is also redesigned, faster to load, and appears much lighter. You can reply to individual tweets from this new menu, retweet them (native), favorite them, or share them via copying the link to your clipboard or emailing a link. The swipe for quick actions option within the timeline view is no longer present. You can now also view who has retweeted a particular tweet.

Connect: Connect is an all new addition to Twitter for iPhone. This menu includes a Mentions tab and an Interactions tab. The Mentions tab just shows all of your @replies through Twitter – as the application has always allowed you to do, but the Interactions feature is all-new. Interactions, as described by Twitter, lets you track your impact across Twitter. Interactions shows all the actions other people take related to you and your Tweets. See who follows you, retweets or favorites one of your Tweets, or adds you to a list.

Discover: The discover tab lets Twitter be a great, light news reader type of service. The view shows you “stories” which are like trending topics and points you to websites covering the information. In addition, top trending topics and hashtags are shown in this Discover view. You can also find Twitter friends via your the address book and choose who to follow based on people you follow that are similar.

Me: The Me tab shows your profile: how many times you have tweeted, how many people you are following, and how many people are following you. You can also manage your Direct Messages from here, manage your tweet drafts, organize and view lists, switch accounts, access settings, get Twitter help, and view saved searches from here. (Tip from @tmdvs: “Swipe up on Me tab in twitter to open DMs and left or right to swap accounts.”)

Overall, this is a fantastic update for Twitter for iPhone. It’s faster, lighter, easier to use, and of course free. The new features released in this iPhone version are in-fact iPhone only. Twitter is yet to announce and release a new iPad version. It’s available here from the App Store. Full screenshot gallery of the new Twitter app is after the break
