New hands-on footage claims to show 5.5-inch ‘iPhone Air’ (Video)

As the days go by leading up to next week’s September 9th event, the part leaks for Apple’s next flagship handsets keep streaming in. The 5.5-inch model in particular has been getting a lot of attention lately, with multiple sources leaking photos of its casing and supposed components. Today’s offering, courtesy of French site Nowhereelse.fr, is another look at the shell of what the publication is calling the “iPhone Air.”

Apple is reportedly working on two models of the next iPhone for release this fall, both rumored to be getting the spotlight at a special event on September 9th. Both models of the refreshed flagship are said to be getting a larger screen than the iPhone 5s, shipping in both 4.7 and 5.5-inch sizes. The above 5.5-inch device is rumored to be shipping with a sapphire crystal display, while it’s reported that only some of the smaller, 4.7-inch models will sport the same.

Various reports have claimed that while the 4.7-inch model will be available more readily, the 5.5-inch version may be released later in the calendar year due to supply constraints on key components. That said, the latest reports from reliable sources suggest that both models will at least be unveiled come September 9th. Apple is reportedly also planning to introduce a wearable product at that event as well.

Interesting. I wonder how much later on (after the 4.7″ model) this will be released. The naming scheme will also be interesting to see play out. iPhone Air would mirror the iPad and MacBook lines, but might not happen this year.

    • klepp0906 - 10 years ago

It won’t be later. It will be simultaneously. Otherwise it will hurt sales and if nothing else apple is all about the numbers. Anyone who thinks otherwise … Well… Yea.

Put your money where your mouth is :p

      • Taste_of_Apple - 10 years ago

They’ll introduce it simultaneously…but selling is not the same. Recall iPad mini with Retina Display being released a few weeks after. I shall be putting my money in Apple’s pocket come release time. ;)

I sincerely hope all these leaks are a distraction from a ‘main’ event, because personally I’m getting pretty bored of the design of this phone now.

    • This will be the iPhone. Don’t expect anything else. Be real. The wonders would be software interaction with Yosemite OS. That’s all. A bigger Phone and iOS8. No iWatch no iTV no iNothing.

      • Bruno Fernandes (@Linkb8) - 10 years ago

Umm, I guess you’ll be surprised when you see the iMonocle. CPU, memory and storage matching that of the best desktop computers, cleverly housed in a top hat.

      • klepp0906 - 10 years ago

More interwebz misinfo. They will be showing the iwatch. Won’t be going on sale yet though. If you feel otherwise, perhaps your a betting man?

    • Pierre Calixte - 10 years ago

you’re not lying…this phone hasn’t been released and I too am bored with it. I think I’m holding onto my iphone 5S to like iphone 7 or 8.

  3. Bruno Fernandes (@Linkb8) - 10 years ago

No doubt this is based on the actual design, but I didn’t see anything new in that video.

  4. (having just seen a link about the iPhone 6’s battery right above)

4.7 inches and only ~250mAh more.

Something tells me the actual battery life will not improve. The 5S’s battery life is lousy already (from personal experience), and the 6 will almost certainly be even worse.

I guess nobody told them that a phone entails its battery lasting more than roughly 20 hours (and I DON’T use it much). Where is that era where mobile phones lasted for days/weeks on a charge?

    • nsxrebel - 10 years ago

you mean the era where phones were used only for, phone calls? maybe texting also.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

There’s no teaching people. It’s sad. I fully expect my phone to last 20 hours, while pushing multiple email accounts to me, background refreshing Facebook, and watching HD videos all day. Duuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

    • Apple doesn’t care about a bigger battery. Most devote iphone users will tell you that Apple just needs to optimize the software and it will last longer. A bigger screen with only 250 mah added is idiotic if you ask me.

But look at it from this point: it is thinner!! LOL What a bunch of crap.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Please explain to me exactly how much battery capacity and real world longer battery life they could attain with that extra .6mm thickness. Oh that’s right, you are 100% ignorant in regards to that. I’ll leave it to the people that know a lot about it, and are actually intelligent, unlike yourself.

  5. Am I the only one around here who still thinks that the 5.5′ option is an ipod…..?

  6. o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

If Apple calls either one of them the iPhone Air, I really will feel bad for them, because that is insanely stupid naming scheme for a device that got physically larger, and weighs more.

iPad Air made sense…since, you know… it became physically smaller in length, width, and depth, and physically weighed less.

They should be called iPhone 6 and iPhone 6L, it’s as simple as that, and that’s also not confusing, it actually makes sense. In no reality does iPhone Air for this iPhone, make sense, sorry, it just doesn’t. Not even a marketing standpoint, and that’s all the naming is really for anyway.

    iPhone 6 – 4.7″
    iPhone 6L – 5.5″
    Don’t be ridiculously stupid Apple.

    • Xavier Poirot (@dalaen) - 10 years ago

Oh so you already know the weight of the new iPhone?
You’re so cool, and everyone else is stupid like you say, indeed.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Oops sorry I don’t know the weight, I’m just intelligent so I know that a 5.5″ huge device will weigh more than oh, say, the iPhone 5S, or iPhone 4.7″. Guess you aren’t though :(

      • Xavier Poirot (@dalaen) - 10 years ago

        http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=6074&idPhone2=6144

Check out those numbers and just stop barking around.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Hahaha I have no idea what the hell you are even trying to convey with that site, it makes absolutely no sense. How does anything on there have anything to do with an iPhone? Lol

    • Matt - 10 years ago

I could see them at least copying the MacBook naming scheme. 4.7″ is air and 5.5″ is pro. I don’t really like it, but it’s better than calling the larger of the two devices the Air.

Yes I know they call the larger iPad… The Air. But that at least it is smaller than it’s previous form factor (the 4th gen iPad). I mean are they really going to put an air name on the largest iPhone ever made?

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

If they called it iPhone Air, and iPhone Pro I would laugh hysterically at their embarrassingly idiotic naming scheme and marketing.

No phone in history should ever be called iPhone Pro. You DONT make a smartphone for ‘Pro’ users. The ‘Pro’ users get the best just like everyone else. That works in a laptop, not a phone. Just sayin

    • Or they could just get rid of the numbering scheme and have the following;

iPhone C (4″ entry model, in color)
      iPhone (4.7″ model)
      iPhone L (5.5″ model)

  7. Matt - 10 years ago

Battery life won’t improve. They’ll bump battery capacity, but it will only be enough to make up for larger display. I’m not convinced that we’ll see a 5.5″ inch display or iWatch on the 9th. However, the location of the event makes me want to believe it’s something bigger (pun intended) than just a new iPhone announcement.

Really though as stated here by others… Software is the real differentiator at this point (iOS 8 and beyond).

    • herb02135go - 10 years ago

Battery life will suck but I’m sure the early reviewers won’t point that out. They want access after all.

      • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Well battery life sucks on all of the android based phones so it’s not like it would be anything different if this battery life sucks.

      • Battery life has sucked on the iphone 5, 5s, and 5c. So this won’t be any different. I guess Apple will give better battery or a bigger one in the 6s. They do always willfully withhold things just for the next release iphone.

  8. tina2sun (@tina2sun) - 10 years ago

if the camera of the new mode will stick out like the pic shows, i guess i will pass. probably just hang on to my iphone 5 unless i lost it. i feel apple is getting a little too fast to update the iphone modes before they are perfected. of course iphone is still the best on the market and i will still be stuck with it, but just feeling that the product is not 100% perfection no more. from the iphone 5 black paint to this year camera sticking out…… hope they could be 120% sure its a perfect master piece before the release it. i dont mind a little waiting. sincerely

    • o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

Your grammar isn’t 100% perfection, that’s for sure. Anyway, the black and slate color was far and away, superior to the space grey color. I have a black and slate iPod Touch right now, and it has no scratches. Don’t scratch your device and you’ll be fine. Like the space grey doesn’t scratch? The only thing that would happen slightly differently is you’d be able to tell that there are scratches slightly less. They should have kept black and slate or even made it darker slightly.

P.S. The camera sticks out of the iPod Touch, and I own one, and have had no problems with it, ever. If you use a case and complain about it you’re a complete moron anyway. Assuming you don’t use a case, then you still have nothing to worry about, unless you just don’t like the design.

  9. Surfer (@exsurfer) - 10 years ago

If this is the design, I would be shocked and dismayed. This thing is hideous. What’s up with those god-awful lines in the back? I have a difficult time that Ive would feel comfortable with this hardware. If this is the design, the lack of having Jobs around will finally reveal that Cook does not have the discerning eye his predecessor did.
