ABC News goes one-on-one with Tim Cook to talk Apple Watch and Steve Jobs

Yesterday ABC News teased an exclusive interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook, and following today’s keynote address we got a chance to see ABC’s David Muir talk to the executive about the new Apple Watch, which Cook notes in the clip was only started after Steve Jobs passed away in 2011.

Cook notes that he thinks Jobs would have been “incredibly proud” of the company’s work and its first foray into the new wearables product category.

You can see the clip below.

  1. Cooks fails to realize that what we witnessed today has nothing of Jobs on it. This is one of the worst announcements to date. Not to mention the products were mediocre and a rehash of last years phone but in this case it’s ugly.

    • You are correct.

    • Ben Dixon (@bengdixon) - 10 years ago

Apple is Jobs – They’re working as if he is overlooking them still. This has been one of the biggest announcements to date… look at the facts. Your opinion of what the phone looks like is your own but it reminds me of the original iPhone and I like that. I think it looks so much sleeker than what’s coming out of other phone manufacturers. The only thing that concerns me is how it sits on the camera whilst flat on a table.

    • Bruno Fernandes (@Linkb8) - 10 years ago

But I thought last years phone was just a rehash of the iPhone 5 of the previous year? And wasn’t the iPhone 5 just a rehash of the iPhone 4S. Oh that’s right, but that one was a rehash of the iPhone 4. Hmm.. I think we’re in a bit of a pattern here.

Ok, the original iPhone. That one was original. Or was it? Is that OK with you?

      • You are correct sir, last year phone was a rehash of the 4. The difference is the 4 looked better than them all.

    • D.A.H. Trump - 10 years ago

You may not like the design and I don’t disagree with you, but based on their announcements, it’s the best iPhone they have to date.

    • mockery17 - 10 years ago

      Your life is pathetic.

Could you comment on the print-quality “Retina” display introduced with the iPhone 4? I thought that was a milestone in computing.

Take a look at Tim’s watch. It stays on the app screen the whole time. Shouldn’t it revert to the, uh, *time* screen once it’s clear you don’t need to be on that screen anymore?

  3. Should be interesting to see how (if they can) tackle the issue of ownership of status watches vs apple watch ownership. What makes someone want to replace their $1000 status symbol created by Cartier or pricer items made by Rolex… items that they have earned by working or by legacy. I just can’t see an iPhone accessory doing this. But congrats to Tim Cook in releasing a product many will purchase, aiding to his stock price and “innovation.”

Steve wouldn’t have been proud of that awful streaming experience. Good lord. Apple TV and the site via Safari was just bad for 90 minutes.

  5. Billy Devine - 10 years ago

Steve would of never let this watch come out.

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Oh well, glad you got to voice your opinion. Now back to robotic cliche hell.

  6. chudman85 - 10 years ago

Haha true what happened to the whole screen size war Steve jobs started my finger goes from here to here etc I need bigger hands now lol

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Do you guys not understand how these things work? I mean, really NOT understand?

Whatever Apple does and says and is the best thing ever. They may know full well that they plan to change gears because they have a better idea, or because the market dictates it. But until they do, what they have is the greatest thing ever. Then when the next thing (that may or may not contradict the old thing) THAT becomes the greatest thing ever.

Its called sensible marketing. Its not called, “We are locked into this forever because one time we called it the best way”.

      • It’s called Samsung!! Because of Samsung, Apple is all over the place. They are reactive not proactive. This keynote was gimmicky and un Apple like!! Apple has now advanced into 2012. I hope Apple iOS users are pleased.

I agree with a lot of the sentiment here. I think Steve is rolling in his grave. From the design of the phone to the adaptation of NFC to the integration with U2. Apple is a premium brand but it seems the longer Steve is gone the company loses focus. Steve was so against NFC yet we’re now seeing it in the new phones. Apple has a lot to brag about in this new phone but I hardly feel Steve remotely in this new phone.

    • dugbug - 10 years ago

I’m quite impressed by the watch. Will def have to learn more. For example how well that crown works.

Oh and for the love of god would the high school kids stop whining about what jobs would and would not like.

    • Lewis (@LewisDorigo) - 10 years ago

“Steve was so against NFC yet we’re now seeing it in the new phones”

Steve was also against video on the iPod. Until they produced an iPod that played video. He was also against 7″ Tablets, and no-one can argue that the iPad Mini is anything less than great.

  8. elpichu - 10 years ago

Where are the new models of Mac Mini?! this demo sucks…

  9. chudman85 - 10 years ago

I love the look and ideas with the Apple watch and will definitely get one but the biggest thing I’m concerned about is here in NZ we have no Apple stores and buying online will not give you the feel of how the 2 sizes fit and what the bands feel like to wear

    • dugbug - 10 years ago

Yeah. I was thinking of cutting out two pieces of cardboard for the two phones.

I’m intrigued at the iPad style landscape features of the big one but not wanting to wear parachute pants to store it

      • dugbug - 10 years ago

Oh sorry that was for the iphone sizes.

How many “What Steve would have done” are we going to hear every time Apple does something. This is exactly what Steve did not want. Read Steve’s bio – he told Cook – do whats right. NFC was not of any value few years ago and especially when Steve was deciding on products. But now with Touch ID in place and deals with banks and merchants, mobile wallet may finally materialize. To make it happen, Apple needed to put in NFC chip. They did not put NFC chip to put a checkmark on the box. It is now useful – this is exactly what Steve said – do whats right now! Tech exists to be useful for people not for the sake of bragging who put it in first. Same with watch – we would never know if Steve even was a fan of wearables at all. In this case Apple would have released nothing. Steve is biggest loss to Apple, no doubt, and throwing it around every time just plain hurts. But emotions, aside, watch is a fashionable piece that does not fit every ones tastes. It is simply impossible. There are round and square watches , and people happily buy each kind.

    • bellevueboy - 10 years ago

I agree 100%, it didn’t. Make sense then and makes sense now. And with apple doing it it will make even more sense because of the install base. Yes…do the right thing. Steve was great but he is gone and I miss him but tim cook, apple and all of us have to move on. Tim needs to do what is right and not dwell on what Steve would do. as I have said before Apple is primed to go in for the kill in the next 6 months. People said it was not cool any more it just showed today what cool and stylish is. It’s not enterprise…wait for q2 and it wil be in enterprise with iPad pro and ibm.

      • bellevueboy - 10 years ago

Oh and one more thing ;) ;) I think apple had to go for style a bit more that just cool features with apple watch because of the addressable market. Not a lot of business men and women would want to buy a geeky watch. It would be fun to see what app developers do with the watch kit.

  11. breakingallillusionsx - 10 years ago

There’s a lot of crying going on. The watch blew the water out of the water lol. It’s the best there is and will be. The new phones are perfect. Simple if you don’t like it don’t buy it or switch but for the love of god stop crying.

    • bellevueboy - 10 years ago

Right, this is what steve himself said, “we are only humans trying to make the best products, if people like our product they will buy them and if they don’t they won’t and it will all work itself out”

I wonder if the face of the watch is reversible I mean rotate it left 180degrees such that the crown is on the bottom left so that, wearing it on my left hand I can rotate or press it with the thumb and leave my index finger(of right hand) to touch the screen.

    • tidersisbeter - 10 years ago

I was thinking the exact same thing. I wear a tommy hilfiger watch at the moment and when I got it, I was so disappointed that they didn’t have a “left hander’s” option. It’s not a big deal for a normal watch, and I doubt that most if any watchmakers make “left handed” watches, but for a watch where one of the crucial inputs is the crown, it really needs to be reversible. Using an index finger on it will just be awkward

      • bellevueboy - 10 years ago

Looks like our prayer is answered.

  14. herb02135go - 10 years ago

Too bad Apple couldn’t get FDA approval to make something innovative.

    • Hmm, do you even think sometime? Do you even realise they may have Apple Watch 2 almost ready or finishing more sensors. It’s not like pack it with everything we got now and half of it won’t be reliable, this is not shamesung, you need to realise that herbie!

  15. herb02135go - 10 years ago

I’ve never seen such pathetic journalism. Was Muir trying to get information or trying to get a date?

He never thanked Tim for the freebies, either.

  16. Ian Pullens - 10 years ago

did anyone else notice that at the end of the second clip that Tim calls it the “iWatch” and not “Watch”… seams to me like that might have been a last minute change. Also I think the obsession with the “i” was from Steve and I would not be surprised if they start to get away from it now that Tim is in charge.
