Apple seeds third OS X 10.10.2 beta highlighting fixes for WiFi, Mail, & VoiceOver

Apple has seeded a new build of pre-release OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 highlighting focus ares including WiFi, Mail, and VoiceOver. The third tester preview of OS X 10.10.2 brings the build number up to 14C81f following build 14C78c released earlier this month. We’ll update with any notable changes spotted in the new release for testers.

OS X users on the Yosemite pre-release release cycle can find the update through the Mac App Store via the Updates tab.

Notably, both Mail and VoiceOver fixes appear as new focus areas for this release over the previous pre-release version.

Apple released the first OS X 10.10.2 pre-release version to testers with the build number 14C68k on November 20th three days after the public release of OS X 10.10.1 which also aimed to resolve WiFi issues.

Yesterday, Apple updated Safari for OS X users on Yosemite, Mavericks, and Mountain Lion not on the pre-release release cycle.

Earlier this week, Apple released the second iOS 8.2 beta for developers testing WatchKit and iOS 8.1.2 publicly with a resolution for ringtone purchasing issues.

Installing now. Fingers crossed that this update will actually fix the wifi and mail issues. I won’t hold my breath though.

I hope they are working on RAM management too and web notify.
Actually I have more than 9 GB of ram usage (only with Safari and mail opened) and 19 Mb (yes, megabyte) of swap memory (that has no meaning, especially on a machine with 16 Gb of available memory).

    Wake up, Apple!

    • Howie Isaacks - 9 years ago

Do you notice a performance hit when this happens? I sometimes see something like this, but I don’t have a performance hit. OS X memory management was at its worst on OS X Lion, but seems to have improved a lot since then. Entering sudo purge in Terminal will free up the memory that is being temporarily held for apps you’ve recently had open.

That’s weird.. I have a mac mini (Late 2012) only with 4Gb of ram and i have no problem running yosemite or any app’s.

    • mikhailt - 9 years ago

That is normal, OS X will use up all the available RAM to cache your open apps and optimize them to run faster.

Unused RAM is just wasted RAM.

Do not look at the RAM usage, look at the swap usage instead. If it is swapping in and out, there’s a problem. If it is not swapping, then there is no issues.

sure, sure… I have 16 Gb of available memory, i am ok if the system uses all the memory that it has got.
Mavericks did the same, Yosemite is just a few more “hungry”… The weird thing is the usage of swapping memory for 15-20-50 Megabyte (we know, going to write and read on the ssd it’s not the best way even for the life time of the disk -and, anyway, – it has no sense) and using compress memory for 100mb to 400mb when you have got 5-6-or 7 Gigabyte or RAM free has simply no sense. On a i7 i can’t notice, actually, hit of performance but it has no meaning anyway (i noticed that the algorithm that free rams goes on when i woke up (or i put to sleep) the system even after few hours of VERY basic usage (internet and mailing).

In mavericks I tryed the worst stress test possibile for reviewing the mac, opened tens and tens of apps and the system NEVER swapped or used compress memory. Never. I just think the algorithm for “releasing” memory is too much aggressive.

I bug reported the issue but still no answer. For Safari notifications and apple.geod crashes they still know the issue.

Honestly I think Apple should give up with the annual cycles of updates, it’s evident that, from years, they can’t release a stable software version worthy of this name.

That’s for caches. The more you have the more it uses. Then through technologies like page compression it even optimize the amount of RAM you have. Remember it’s not Windows. OS X knows what it’s doing. :-)

Let’s hope this sorts out the wake from sleep issue, the black screen of death issue and the recognition of iOS devices in iTunes issue!!! I will hold my breath! Apple … don’t fail me now!

    • Howie Isaacks - 9 years ago

I haven’t heard of those problems. I haven’t experienced them. Are you sure that it’s a Yosemite thing?

      • mrkpntr - 9 years ago

Definitely! Ever since going to 10.10.2.

    • Spoiler alert: it doesn’t :(

      • mrkpntr - 9 years ago

Really? Please tell me it does! If it doesn’t can anyone explain what Apple are doing releasing software that wrecks your hardware?

    • I found a solution for the wake from sleep issue that might work for you, if you have AirParrot installed. From https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6693039?start=15&tstart=0

For Macs running OS X 10.6, the following commands can be run from the terminal:

      sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/APExtFramebuffer.kext
      sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AirParrotDriver.kext
      sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.squirrels.AirParrot.plist
      sudo rm -rf /Applications/AirParrot.app

For users using OS X 10.9 or 10.10 the following additional commands may be necessary:

      sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/APExtFramebuffer.kext
      sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/AirParrotDriver.kext

Had the same situation here on my iMac – it is a hit or miss whether it wakes up from sleeping or whether i have to do a forced reboot.

      • mikhailt - 9 years ago

        Which iMac is this?

      • Kawaii Gardiner - 9 years ago

        @mikhailt:

It is a iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) – the issue is random rather than something you can point to in terms of “if I ran this” or “if I have this loaded” or “every 4th sleep it fails to wake up” which makes me wonder whether the issue is driver related.

  4. I want to install it but at the same time i dont in fear that i will loose Chrome again. I think i will wait and do it once i know its okay. And maybe they’ll fix the battery issues. I have a late 2013 15″ Retina MacBook Pro, and if i unplug it i only get a few hours of use compared to the 8+ hours i used to get before updating to the 10.10.2 betas.

Chrome looks good with the third pre-release version. I think the second pre-release version resolved that issue.

  5. Kimberly Jeans - 9 years ago

I was part of the public beta testing program and for some reason am not getting these seeds. Is there a particular reason?

    • Zac Hall - 9 years ago

Check System Preferences > App Store > “Your computer is set to receive pre-release Software Update seeds” Change

      • hoorayberet00 - 9 years ago

Not seeing the seeds either. Checked my system preferences > App Store and it stated it was set to receive pre-release Update seeds. But it still isn’t showing.

Another update to fix things that didn’t work during a previous release?
Seems to happen a lot these days for Apple users, doesn’t it?

    • Kawaii Gardiner - 9 years ago

No worse than any other software vendor although I do think that Apple should be raising the bar rather than being ‘only as good as the rest’.

  7. Taste_of_Apple - 9 years ago

I hope this update actually fixes issues caused by the previous one. Let’s hope.

    • Mark Pointer - 9 years ago

Sadly, the wake from sleep issue still persists! That’s nearly a month of this problem now … not good!

      • Markus (@jokey2k) - 9 years ago

Does it happen on a clean install as well, as in, might it be hardware? Or is it some tool like AirParrot stepping out of its bounds? Also have you raised a bug report?

  8. Gregg Palmer - 9 years ago

Has there been any attempt to fix the problems with Preview and editing PDF’s?

  9. thank god that i’m still on mavericks

  10. applecore2 - 9 years ago

Is it just me or has Google been removed as an option for new “Internet Accounts” from System preferences? Might not be specific to this build, but it doesn’t show up.

  11. Claus Bettag - 9 years ago

Since updated iTunes does not recognize my iPod Classic any more. It is displayed in finder but does not show in iTunes

  12. jjosel - 9 years ago

One thing. It is not Wi-Fi issues. It is library issue. When I experience this ‘issue’ it only affects Apple software. I mean chrome and everything not from Apple connects to the internet. Apple mail, iTunes, the terminal, the app Store… Doesn’t. So the issue is with Apple’s network library not the app or the core OS since all third party apps connects to the internet when this happens.

My wi-fi doesn’t work using iMac with Yosemite 10.10.2
