How to publish on the new iOS 9 Apple ‘News’ app

Apple unveiled its brand new iOS 9 “News” app today that will bring a reader experience comparable to magazine-style apps like Flipboard that pull in content from various sources around the web. It’s starting with an initial list of publishers like Vanity Fair, Vogue, GQ, Wired, and others, but here’s how to get your own content in the app.

  1. 1. First you’ll need to visit Apple’s News Publisher portal here.
  2. 2. Sign in using the Apple ID you want associated with your publication on News
  3. 3. Next Apple will ask you to agree to its End User License Agreement for News
  4. 4. Now Apple will ask for your personal information including the name of your publication, address, phone number, etc
  5. 5. You can then set your channel name, website address, and select your primary audience, languages and specify territories if you wish.
  6. Apple News optionally lets you select multiple channels for your publication as well:

-After submitting, click the name of your channel in the toolbar in News Publisher
-Select ‘Create New Channel’

For now you can use the News Publisher portal to sign your publication up for inclusion using your website’s RSS feed, but Apple says it will add publishing tools later this year:

Coming Soon: Apple News Format

We’re working on bringing you a brand new format you can use to create signature content for News. With Apple News Format, you’ll be able to create beautifully crafted layouts with custom typography, rich photo galleries, videos, and animations. Author once and News will optimize your content for all iOS devices. You’ll also be able to connect your existing content management systems to News, and get access to a rich suite of tools for measuring user engagement.

Apple notes that for advertising, publishers keep 100% revenue of their own ad sales and the usual 70% if Apple sells them for you through iAd. Apple has tips on preparing your RSS feed, assets, and content for the service, as well as information on advertising. There’s a general FAQ for publishers here.

The News app will launch with iOS 9 this fall in the United States, UK, and Australia.

Curious as to how more specific outlets will be handled. I write for a site that publishes content related to the game ‘Vainglory,’ and I wonder if they’ll be able to suggest sites like ours to people who have the game installed.

I’m wondering the same thing (not specifically). How will this mimic what they’re doing with Apple Music Connect for smaller publishers, or will it.

They launched a bunch of intelligence features but I don’t think it will be intelligent enough to do that. What they did mention was that they will have very granular interests. So people might be able to follow the Vainglory category. Big fan of the game btw.

If you want to follow smaller publishers, I suggest using Hinto.co

  3. Will the address you enter be shown publicly?
