iOS 9.0.1 released with fix for stuck setup assistant, alarm bugs, and more

Apple has pushed out an iOS update to address issues users have experienced with the Setup Assistant app getting stuck on “Slide to Upgrade.” The 9.0.1 update also fixes a problem with alarms and timers failing to play, and setting up a cutom APN could disable cellular connections. There’s also a fix for Safari and Photos could distort a video if it was paused during playback.

iOS 9.0.1 is available from the Software Update section of the Settings app. Apple also released new betas of iOS 9.1 and tvOS today.

Easily the buggiest .0 iOS release ever for me.

Bugs I encountered in iOS 9.0:

‘Clear’ button in the phone app to erase history randomly disappears.
‘Categories’ button in the App Store app randomly switches from left to right and back.
    Unresponsive iPhone
    Unresponsive lock screen
3 random restarts since the upgrade to iOS 9.
Siri never hears me, I press the siri button, talking to it but doesn’t do anything. I have to do this 7-8x for it to work again.
When in the messages app, in a conversation, the ‘Messages’ button to go back to the list of all your conversation randomly disappears, requires me to kill the app for it to return.

I’m positive not even half of those bugs were fixed in 9.0.1…
Next year I will be waiting a couple of weeks before ‘upgrading’.

You know? I thought the alarms and timers was just me. I thought I did something. Should’ve put two into together…

Funny. Just realized dictation made “two and two” two into…

Before update the app store says I have 0 app updates

After update app store says I have 15 updates

I check the apps and they are already on the version that the app store wants me to update to.

    BUGS BUGS BUGS everywhere!

Update was painless and quick for me.

I, too, had about 15 updates as soon as it updated. WTF is that about?

Still tempted to put the new 9.1 Developers version on this phone before the new one shows up on Friday.

Apple has reissued a bunch of old app updates for some unexplained reason. Not even developers of the apps affected seem to know why.

      • AeronPeryton - 9 years ago

I’m guessing that updating is wiping out a plist file somewhere and the phone thinks you haven’t updated certain apps. Last year when iOS 8 came out, it started download OLD versions of apps, downgrading a number of them and then announcing that there were updates just as soon as it finished! Bizarre.

      • Mike Beasley - 9 years ago

Nope, it’s not related to iOS at all. iTunes on the Mac shows the same thing. These are for sure being reissued.

      • scumbolt2014 - 9 years ago

You are correct. I’m still on iOS 9 and have 29 pending updates

I wonder if this update fixes the AirPlay issues many people including myself have streaming music to AirPlay speakers. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7218493

Did Apple/or maybe someone here not claim that ios 9 will be a big patch for ios8…since there was not much added really. And 9.1 is already on its 2nd beta. It’s pretty buggy for me as well. Siri doesn’t seem any better?

Anyone encountering that apps show a black screen for a second when opening them? Its not happening every time, maybe just after a period of inactivity. This never happenen on iOS 8.

  8. Chris Cicero - 9 years ago

My podcast app stopped working after 9.0 on both my iPhone 6+ and iPad mini. 9.01 has not fixed it. sucks.

    • iSRS - 9 years ago

Same here. I can listen but can’t download.

Question – I have iTunes Match and Apple Music. Since 9.0, My Music is empty. Stays with “Loading Library” – Never finishes. Nothing fixes it.

Since I am getting my 6s Friday, I haven’t bothered to restore to see if it fixes it.

Oddly, none of this was an issue in the Betas. Maybe I will install 9.1 beta to see if that fixes it. I am going to set my 6s up as new anyway.

  9. I wonder if this fixes the fact that spotlight doesn’t bring contacts into the search…at least not on the top like they should be. Dear Apple – it’s a PHONE – contacts are sort of an important thing to spotlight.

It does for me if you swipe from the home screen. If you pull down it doesn’t.

  10. Jeff Greco (@jeffgreco) - 9 years ago

I didn’t have any significant problems with 9.0, but trying to upgrade to 9.0.1 gave me the dreaded Swipe to upgrade freeze failure. If you’re on 9.0 without any problems, I would recommend against updating.

after this update I can’t select a date in calender. who has the same issue?

  12. Thomas Massengale - 9 years ago

9 was a great upgrade for my 5S, but since upgrading to 9.0.1, apps have been crashing and vanishing constantly including Mail! A real disaster.

Is it just me, or while you text something it gets really slow and unresponsive? i got an iphone 5

    • It’s not just you. It rendered my iPhone 5 useless. It freezes for prolonged periods of time and eventually appears to restart, and when it “works” its sluggish and feels horrible. I had to soft reset it so many times since that I lost count. Now what saddens me the most is I preordered the 6s and I promised this phone to my mom – a good upgrade from her 8GB iPhone4 to iPhone5 64GB. Now, how can I give this useless brick to her. And it was working perfectly before…

    • Apple should allow to roll back IOS version – it’s in the paying customers interest to do so – just like paying customers can do that on a traditional computer.

What the hell happened to Voicemail on my iP6+ after the OS9 upgrade???? My wife’s iP5 Voicemail still has the screen with all the voicemails shown after the OS9 upgrade. I have the new version that calls the phone and gives me number prompts… WTF? Can I undo it?

  15. Tim An Monika Chapman - 9 years ago

Could someone explain to me how im supposed to upgrade to 9.1 when its stuck in the slide to upgrade mode? Whilst like this it wont connect to itunes either….

  16. Tim An Monika Chapman - 9 years ago

how do you download 9.01 when the phone is stuck in slide to upgrade? It also wont connect to itunes in this mode!!!

  17. Rene G. Solis - 9 years ago

Apple needs to add a Restart/Reboot option when you press on the power button. Also, wish they would show my email address whenever I click on an blank space asking for my email address. Also, a downloads folder would be helpful as well.

  18. Colin Youell - 9 years ago

Since upgrade, Apple TV only plays sound, no picture what so ever.
Also it freezes on apps like Facebook
    Random restarts.

Since my son uploaded the update of iOS9 his Ipad air just crashes, he cannot switch it off otherwise he has to restore it again (and this takes several goes) – everytime a ‘new’ update for the ios9 comes along, we think yeah this will fix it – sadly no, just updated the new new version and still all im left with is a black screen and a little apple in the middle
