Latest iPhone 7 Plus camera hands-on puts the device to test in the outdoors [Gallery]

We’ve already seen the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus put to use at the U.S. Open and at an NFL game. Now, Outside Online has gone hands-on with the iPhone 7 Plus and put the device’s camera to use in a variety of adventure use cases. Just as with the U.S. Open and NFL photos, the camera seems to live up to the hype…

In the gallery of 17 photos, a variety of different angles are shown off. The gallery features action shots, nature snaps, and more. After using the device for a while, Outside Online calls the iPhone 7 Plus the “best small, lightweight camera you can get for the money.” Apple itself has always touted the iPhone as being the most versatile camera available and this Outside Online endorsement will certainly help win over a certain segment of the market.

To review the camera in the new iPhone 7 Plus, I chased Outside editors up rivers, down dusty singletrack, through the woods, and into classic New Mexican burrito joints. Over four days of in-the-field testing, I’ve found it to be the best small, lightweight camera you can get for the money, ideal for shooting outdoor adventures when you don’t want to lug around pounds of heavy equipment.

The publication also praises the device as capturing details in shadows and highlights much better than the iPhone 6s did, while color is also much more “accurate and vivid.” As far as RAW support goes, Outside Online notes of the added detail that RAW files offer over traditional JPEGs.

The iPhone 7 Plus features two 12MP cameras on the back, one of which is a wide-angle lens, while the other is telephoto. The wide-angle lens has an f/1.8 aperture, while the telephoto lens has an f/2.8 aperture. Because of the dual-camera setup, the iPhone 7 Plus is able to offer high-res optical zoom at 2x, which is a first for the iPhone lineup. As far as the flash goes, there’s a new quad-LED True Tone design.
