Skype updates for iPad: no Push Notification, no 3G, not even formatted for iPad

Skype updated their iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad app today to 1.3.1 with the below improvements.

Tested with iPad, iPhone OS 3.2  Improved stability in the following areas: – When switching between tabs – During an incoming call with chat in landscape mode – When in landscape mode – During an incoming call when there is a camera/address book view visible – Handling unread chats – Corrected an alert about ‘unsupported platform’

“Tested with iPad” doesn’t mean it is actually formatted for iPad.  It still is iPhone-sized.  But that’s not the worst of it.

There is no reason besides some back door dealings with Verizon that they shouldn’t have 3G or Push Notifications working on the iPhone by now.  Need proof that they had quit developing for iPhone before the iPad was released?  Have a look at their blog:

We don’t yet know how our app will behave on the iPad. Some journalists who had early access have reported that the existing Skype for iPhone app works just fine on the iPad hardware. This is great news, but certainly doesn’t give us enough confidence to be able to announce and release an app today as we want to give you the best Skype experience possible.

Yep, no work on the iPad Simulator that comes with the starndard development kit.

Russ Shaw, General Manager of Skype’s mobile business in December 2009:

Many of you have also been asking when we’ll release a version which allows you to make calls over 3G – the holy grail of Skype on the mobile, if you like. We’ve had a 3G-capable version ready for some time now, but Apple’s current restrictions mean that they won’t allow us to make it available on the App Store for the moment.

Here’s Skype saying that their 3G version is coming “real soon now” over two months ago.

So tell us again why there is no 3G or Push on Skype?

Fring does offer Skype over 3G.
