While pre-ordering our iPhone 5s and getting the heck out of the Apple Store, we did not notice Apple included some extra copy in the accessory list page that told users:
Your iPhone includes a Lightning to 30-pin Adapter for connecting accessories to devices featuring the lightning connector.
Apple never said this anywhere else—either online, in PR, or at the event. Some people who would have otherwise made the purchase might have skipped buying the adapter, however, which is now backordered until at least October. Some people may have even made the buying decision based on this information (unlikely…but it is right there in black and white).
This is a pretty strange error; it’s not as though some web developer at Apple just made a typo. This specific data applies to an accessory Apple may have considered adding to the iPhone 5 order at some point.
So, the question is: Should customers who purchased an iPhone 5 —with the above stated— get a 30-pin adapter? We hope Apple’s legal team and PR team can come to a compromise so anyone thinking they would receive an adapter after purchasing the iPhone 5 actually gets one.
UPDATE: A reader told TheNextWeb that an Apple online sales representatives confirmed the copy is “an error” and it is “being investigated at the moment.”
The Lightning to 30-pin adapter does not come in the box with iPhone 5. It is sold separately. However, the Lightning to USB cable does come with iPhone 5 for connection to AC chargers and other devices.
