Tim Cook, Craig Federighi talk 30 years of Mac, secrecy, NSA, and sapphire crystal in ABC interview

Last night we reported that Apple CEO Tim Cook has been interviewed by ABC in celebration of 30 years of the Mac. Tonight, the interview will air on World News with Diane Sawyer, but this morning, a tease of the interview was given on Good Morning America. ABC has sent us the above video excerpt of the video. As you can see in the video, Cook is joined by Apple Senior VP Craig Federighi and Apple software VP Bud Tribble.

Interviewer David Muir does not hold his questions back, and specifically asks the trio about secrecy, Apple’s plans for its Arizona plant, and about the iWatch. The interview takes place inside of Apple’s Cupertino headquarters, and we learn some new tidbits about Cook from this interview. According to Muir, the Apple CEO wakes up at 3:45 AM each morning and receives between 700 and 800 emails from customers each day. The CEO says Apple wants to make even more made-in-the-USA products (besides the Mac Pro), and he confirms that the new Mesa, Arizona Apple plant is to develop sapphire crystal.

Oh, and the iWatch? Cook jokingly says Apple is making a “ring” instead.

Tonight, the rest of the interview will showcase Cook’s thoughts on the NSA and more. You can watch the full (very interesting!) excerpt below:

Update: ABC has posted a brief video of Cook on the NSA:

DAVID MUIR: “What is your biggest concern — with the surveillance program here in this country?”
TIM COOK: “I’ve been pushing very, very hard to open the books and be totally transparent. Much of what has been said isn’t true; there is no back door. The government doesn’t have access to our servers. They would have to cart us out in a box for that. And that just will not happen. We feel that — strongly about it. But I do want to be transparent, because I think transparency would help put everything in perspective.”
DAVID MUIR: “Do you think Americans, Tim, would be more at ease if you could tell them more?”
TIM COOK: “I do.”

Just not as exciting as watching Jobs interviews. No passion whatsoever, even feigned. Yes. I’m biased.

Well, your username isn’t wrong. YOU just are.

      • sardonick - 9 years ago

I’m wrong because I don’t agree with you? Typical lemming. Thanks for your input.

      • Tallest Skil - 9 years ago

You’re wrong because you’re deaf. If you don’t think they have the same passion, you’re a sociopath.

      • sardonick - 9 years ago

        You are clueless.

      • Tallest Skil - 9 years ago

Yep, you sure are. Refrain from talking about the Apple executive team until you educate yourself.

      • sardonick - 9 years ago

Little internet kids like you make for good laughs. It’s really all you’re good for, but at least there’s that.

      • Tallest Skil - 9 years ago

You’re making yourself look like a stumbling buffoon to anyone who actually watched the video. You couldn’t spot passion if it kissed you on the mouth.

      • sardonick - 9 years ago

Lemmings like you make everybody look bad.

      • Tallest Skil - 9 years ago

Idiots like you make non-Apple fans look worse.

We done here? Go find another website to crap all over. You’re too stupid to see obvious things in videos, you keep lying about Apple and its products; you don’t have any reason to be here.

It’s a shame that you were not raised better with the tools to interact in polite society. As to where I go, that’s never been your place to decide, nor are you important enough to lay claim to my whereabouts. Little punks that hide behind computers and act as if they actually have anything substantive to contribute are precisely why there’s a rift between camps. You are going to run your uninformed mouth until you’re ignored, which I’m sure you’ll experience plenty. I’ll start here.

      • Tallest Skil - 9 years ago

You erased all chance of deserving politeness when you started spewing lies.

Just stop being a worthless liar. Not that hard.

      • sardonick - 9 years ago

You sound like a butthurt little kid that gets bullied. Or more like a snot nosed kid without manners. Either way, you have no credit. So easy to taunt though, bet you lose your lunch money daily.

      • Tallest Skil - 9 years ago

“How infantile, the puerile mind, removed from all its toys; the adult mind is just as wild if treated oft like boys’.”

        In other words, grow up.

      • sardonick - 9 years ago

Are you always this ridiculous, or are your parents gone for the weekend, leaving you alone again? You’ve officially bored me, and since I can’t find a block option, I’ll just let you fade away. Ask mommy and daddy (assuming you know them) to teach you some social skills.

      • Tallest Skil - 9 years ago

Once again, grow up kiddo. When you have any proof whatsoever of your arguments, someone will start listening to you.

    • Tony Mallory - 9 years ago

I grown to like Tim Cook’s interviews. He’s funny at times, brilliant at times, and always comes across as real.

      • sardonick - 9 years ago

I don’t doubt he’s a capable CEO, or he wouldn’t be where he is. I don’t care for his interview style, or much of any of this style really. Then again, I’m a Forstall and a Wozniak fan too.

Is it possible that the video’s are not available in Europe?

  3. seyss (@seyss) - 9 years ago

watch the “full excerpt”.. you guys are pathetic. where’s the full interview?

    • Jordan Kahn - 9 years ago

Thanks for the helpful comment @seyss. The full interview will be up when it’s available.

About the NSA thing: If there is no backdoor to Apple’s servers, what does Tim want to be more transparent about? The number of iMessages decrypted and stuff like that has been made public. So what else does he want to tell us?

I’m not putting any blame here on Tim or Apple or any other tech company. I actually think they are forced to do things and to keep quiet about things which can seriously hurt their credibility. Kinda troubles my mind.
