Twitch announces SDK to bring game streaming to iOS

Twitch, the leading video game streaming site, has just announced a way to bring the same game-casting possible on desktops to iPhone and iPad. On a PC or Mac, a secondary app is used to effectively screencast the gameplay. Due to the multitasking limitations of iOS, live streaming has not been an option for games until now.

The newly-announced SDK will enable game developers to integrate broadcasting features directly into their games, sidestepping multitasking restrictions. The developer tool will enable live capture and archive features, both video and audio. In addition, the SDK will allow superimposing of front-facing video on top of the gameplay feed for commentary purposes. Archive functionality is also included, if the network conditions are not suitable for instant streaming.

The company said:

“Our vision is to provide the Twitch community with the ability not only to view, but to broadcast live video game content wherever they are, whether they’re on the go or in the living room,” said Matthew DiPietro, VP of Marketing, Twitch. “We’ve achieved that with our PC and console integrations, so the trifecta will soon be complete with our deep and concerted foray into mobile broadcasting.”

Developers can find more information about the SDK at the developer portal.
