Apple updates iOS developer statistics, claims 90% adoption rate for iOS 7

An update to one of Apple’s iOS developer pages today indicates that the latest version of the company’s mobile operating system has reached 90% adoption among users. That’s up about 15% since December of last year, when three quarters of users had upgraded.

The chart doesn’t break down which version of iOS 7 specifically users are running, but it’s safe to assume that the number of devices running iOS 7.1 has increased significantly since it debuted in March.

Apple revealed the next iteration of iOS, version 8.0, is already three betas into testing and is expected to be launched this fall alongside new iPhone hardware.

Now that the backlash has settled over the new design direction, it makes sense that most people are on iOS 7. Apple has always had a good number of users on the current version of iOS. That said, it will be interesting to see how quickly iOS 8 is adopted considering it contains some of the biggest changes (feature wise) since iOS was first introduced alongside the original iPhone.

Yeah, I guess 90% sounds just better than the actual 89%. All just trickery.

Maybe Others is just 1% and not 2%?

These stats seem impossible, as I don’t believe 90% of iOS devices in existence (and use) can even install iOS 7. Maybe they include only iOS7-eligible devices, in which case it really should be noted/reported because it had significantly different meaning.

Though there is that app store mention for a 7 day period. Which means that over that time period, it includes only devices that accessed the store. Not as relevant a metric and doesn’t correspond to the total list of iOS devices. I’d say the statistic can be off by as much as 50%.

I’m hopefully they’ll change their requirements for iOS 8 to allow iPhone4 or that an upcoming Jailbreak will make it possible to install. If I move onto a new device, I’d still like to update the older iPhone.

How many upgrade to OS 7 and then regret it?
