LucasArts’ ‘Star Wars: Commander’ is a free-to-play iOS shooter, invading US right now

A new Star Wars game from the now Disney-owned LucasArts is landing on iPhones and iPads, and it’s a free-to-play combat strategy game (which won’t be free for too long if you don’t have the patience to wait real time for your structures to be built). The game is called Star Wars: Commander, and while it’s only today reaching the US, it has been available in at least one other country for a little while and has received some great reviews.

Getting started, you’ll have to pick between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire, which in turn will determine what kinds of characters you get to train as well as the kinds of vehicles and structures you get to build. You’ll be building a base, sending your troops out to battle, and completing a wide variety of missions—all while being able to call on your favorite Star Wars characters like Darth Vader, Princess Leia, and Han Solo when you need some back up.

The game also features the ability to create what’s called a “Squad,” which let you partner with other players to “build strong alliances.” But you’re not limited to partnering with friends—you can also invade their bases if you would prefer a more violent encounter. Finally, you’ll find that you can travel to various planets around the galaxy for the aforementioned special missions, extending the game to have some amount of story and depth beyond simply upgrading your strike team.

You can get Star Wars: Commander on the App Store for free.

I don’t know if this is a “shooter” as much as it’s a RTS game.

Definitely a Real Time Strategy game. Maybe this will satiate my desire to play that Star Wars skin of Age of Empires game from way back?
