Vogue editor delivers a fashion industry verdict on the Apple Watch [video]

Lisa Armstrong, a contributing editor to Vogue and former Fashion Writer of the Year in the UK, has provided a fashion industry verdict on the Apple Watch – and if she speaks for the rest of the fashion world, Apple should be feeling pretty happy right now. Writing in the Telegraph, she said:

The Apple Watch […] looks terrific, although most of us will deploy a fraction of its potential. Would I like one? Yes. I love watches, and I’m a sucker for a good looking gadget […] [With the Apple Watch] the company is entering the style arena. It should be one hell of a show.

Apple always knew that the watch would need to succeed as a fashion accessory every bit as much as a gadget. The above image – from the Apple website – tells its own story…

The company spent a long time building up a fashion-heavy team, including former Yves Saint Laurent CEO Paul Denevetop Nike design director Ben Shaffer and of course retail head and former Burberry CEO Angela Ahdrents.

Several fashion editors reported that they’d been invited to the launch, and that it was the first time Apple had courted their attention. Apple will doubtless be watching closely to see whether other fashion journalists in attendance share Armstrong’s view.

Tech sites mostly wanted to see a Star Trek futuristic device but Apple was wise to keep the design “basic” to appeal to a wide range of consumers. Its an elegant look and will be a mega success.

I wish the device was out right now so we could compare the quality to the Moto 360 that every tech site is gushing about. My money is Apple watch having a more premium feel and fit/finish.

I like that the wrong video is embedded. It puts things in perspective.

I want That Thing She Wears On Her Arm (aka the Wrist Lojackimator) that Leela wears on Futurama.

What does that video have to do with the article? Indians can’t afford to buy AppleWatches and I can’t think of any reason they would want to.

Tech-heads aren’t very bright when it comes to selling products. Most consumers don’t want some futuristic gizmo because they’re barely comfortable with what they already have. I’m surprised Apple is trying to appeal to the fashion industry because fashions change so rapidly. Watches/accessories could be in one season and out the next. Although I’m sure those fashionistas will love ApplePay so they can buy all their fashion crap on a whim.

First of all, is she paid to say that?
Or is she getting a device for free?

The ridiculously steep price is probably peanuts for her.

Leading heads of fashion and technology have come together to praise the iWatch, is this the beginning of the trend for fashion conscious wearable technology?

    • zBrain (@joeregular) - 10 years ago

fyi, it is called the Apple Watch. not iWatch. a little effort to get it right is what we all should strive.

        Thanks for the tip

      • originaldub - 10 years ago

No need to crucify her I am sure it was an honest mistake.

Speaking of effort you should have made one yourself when you typed out your post. Brutal.

The Apple watch is much nicer than anything on tje market, but that isn’t saying much. It will fail just the same
It’s not that great, design wise or usability wise
Hate to neat a dead horse, but with Steve Jobs gone it only underscores how vital his input was. The iPhone 6 lacks finesse , iOS 7/certainly lacked finesse, and the watch certainly lacks finesse.
At the moment I would be weary of the longtime investment worthyness of Apple. Sure it will take years for Apple to lose its luster, it happens slowly, but we are in that slow-mo trajectory at the.moment. Hope I’m wrong.

At the moment I am I am laughing my ass off at how ridiculous your comment is but then again I should know better then to react to retarded trolls like yourself. By the way you can’t spell for sh*t.

      • RP - 10 years ago

Sounds like some really angry laughter. Lol
When talking about troll maybe take a look in the mirror.
As for my post, I’m a fan and if I look back at them over the years here have proved pretty accurate, don’t see this one being any different. But like I said, hope I am wrong.

    • originaldub - 10 years ago

It’s not angry laughter at all and you are of course entitled to your opinion. Were you at the event yesterday? Do you have hands on experience with either the iPhone 6 or the Apple watch? On what basis are you making these comments? You are just spewing a bunch of empty rhetoric.

I did take you advice, I looked in the mirror and saw me but no troll. Sorry to disappoint.

I think my head is going to explode the next time I hear that the Apple Watch can sense your blood pressure. If it could, I would be in line for it right now.

  9. Heads up; YSL has changed their name to Saint Laurent…

The watch is TOO CHUNKY. It needs a slimmer profile. But I guess that’ll be a feature Apple can sell to everyone in the future. Thinner, lighter, bigger, etc. I’ll wait for Apple Watch 2.0.

I’m reading comments from yersterday and… what is funny is that thousands of watches are produced each year, from 30us do more than one millions each. Each time a new high end watch is produce the comments on spec. blogs are the same.. because each person is touched in a different way by design. At my opinion looking at the pictures on Apple’s website, and not only the keynote, I changed my mind, to me thw glossy with metal strap is ugly, but the aluminium black is great, especially with a leather strap, it changes the whole watch aspect. As usually Apple is clever and will let hundreds of compagnies to produce more different straps, even, at my opinion, even a necklace version for hip-op or fasion styles. Which means some will use it to put logos or graphics on it hanging on neck, as others will pay a lot to get the gold version with a special solid gold strap. Apple, at my opinion, is diabolic with that watch. Why? Because the KEY of that watch is in two part. First ApplePay, and then the anticipating of new way to communicate, but not just on the buzzing vibrating level. On that point many complain that it is not an independant phone. Which is stupid. First because people don’t want to keep their phone all the day with them, not all. And mostly because at my opinion Apple just understood something very simple, more and more people send more texte/voice messages each day than they give phone calls. Because people get more busy, with more noise, with less time, and they tend to use more texts or small records of voice. That’s also why facetime doesn’t get the main communication tool, people don’t want to see others all the time, and even to hear their voice. Secondly, Pay is THE main thing from the keynote, because everybody want to be able to pay quickly, and mire securely, and PAY will even break Paypal at my opinion. So the watch is the key for Pay, because you can go out with your wallet without your phone. And as announced, Apple will get FEES on each transaction. That the fucking most important point, which explains why Apple made a watch for sportsmen, which in reality is mostly focused on normal young people, and one for ‘middle’ class and… the surprising gold version. Because of course the gold version will be bought by gold custommers who will spend a lots more with PAY and so creates a lots of fees to Apple! So that’s why Apples want to be luxury and fashionable, and popular also to young and middle classes all in one product… and the genius of apple in order to do that was to look at “Switzerland” as said Ive. And watches in Switzerland can be illustrated by two brands… Pateck Philippe, the most luxury, expensive, historical and technical watches, and the Smart, the most geniusly stupid cheap watch. They understood that Patek doesn’t sell mainly for technical reasons, most of customers love the technic but don’t understand most of the reasons it is so crazy to make a perpetual to work, it is a question of price, which makes the watch, and so the owner, unique. The symbol is gold. And about Swatch, they were (I say WERE) genius because they make millions of watch with the same movement and stupid UGLY plastic box, nobody wants an ugly plastic watch case, but each model is different in color, strap and details aspects. Apple faced the same problem, some wants a round one, some a square, some a yellow, some a black, but they can make only one case at millions of units. (I say one case because inside both watches are the same). So they made these three different collections, with the most important, option to change very easyly the strap to the infinite, because they understood also that strap is 1/3 of the visual aspect of the watch, combined with the digital face it makes 2/3, and with the 2×3=6 cases options it makes 2,5/3 of the watch which can change. First I thought that apple made a terrible disappointing design, concept and strategy fail. But now I think it is the most crazy, genius and machiavellian thing in history, they are going to make extremely different people to buy the most personnal item after maybe wedding ring and technically it will be the very same product, with the same main billions usd making app, PAY, on it. mouahahahahah

The main question that no media end even nobody asked after Apple’s keynote is: Can the 350 usd high-end Apple Watch detect Ebola symptoms? (…)
