Sony mocks iPhone 6 in Xperia Z3 Compact ad: “Better than bigger”

Samsung isn’t the only one mocking Apple’s new iPhone before the device even officially goes on sale tomorrow. Today Sony released its own jab at Apple with the ad above playing on Apple’s “Bigger than bigger” catchphrase for the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The Xperia Z3 Compact device in the ad sports a 4.6-inch display about the same size as the iPhone 6, but the ad also points out a few specs the new iPhones can’t claim: 2 day battery life, 20.7MP camera, and waterproofing features.

On cue, Samsung and others have also joined in on the iPhone 6 mocking following Apple’s unveiling earlier this month.

  1. specs are great but these companies are just jealous and angry that their competing products aren’t selling as well

    • rzozaya1969 - 10 years ago

A marketing teacher once told me that when you compare to a company or product, you are trying to compare to the top of the class….

      • Tim Jr. - 10 years ago

and usually, that backfires, making people curious, creating more brand awareness for your competitor rather than keeping them focused on your own companies products. It’s free Apple advertising, most times.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Oh, so that’s why Apple had those Apple vs. PC commercials!

      • Even with great specs Sony is still very much a underdog in the smartphone business. Comparing phone catches people’s attention. It made it into a apple fan site didnt it? Most people dont know theres a new sony phone so sites like these are spreading the news for sony. I own both iOS and android devices so I look forward to the getting the iphone 6 and most likely the z3 or the next nexus phone. If sony can put better marketing they can sell much better than samsung.

      • Chad Colliflower (@MRI3t) - 10 years ago

Yeah JackA**…. Bring up something from almost 30yrs ago!!! And I’m sure Apple advertised that way for the same reason, they didn’t quite have their foothold in the computer market @ the time

      • paul55br - 10 years ago

I’m sick and tired of people bringing up the “Mac vs. PC” commercials. Just move on. If Apple thought those commercials were a good idea they would have continued them. Obviously they didn’t. They were fun for a while, but didn’t do any good really. The ads Apple has today speaks a much louder voice.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

        @MRI3t I didn’t know 2009 was 30 years ago. Yikes, times flies.

      • paul4ow - 10 years ago

Market leader isn’t the same as “top of class”, especially so when you have a brand with such blind fronts following it, not aware just how much they are paying over the odds for an inferior product.

    • houstonche - 10 years ago

      Paul,

Are you serious? The Mac vs. pv was a huge success for apple. Calling out the market leader is a great way to expose your brand. the only time it backfires is when the advert does so distastefully. The Mac and pc commercials were excellent at coaxing people to give Mac a shot.

      • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

They were also honest. Unlike Microsofts ads for the Surface, or Windose Phone.

      • ifunography - 10 years ago

I personally disliked those commercials and disliked Apple because of them. I started using Apple products because of friends who got the first iPhone when it was released – I started with the iPod touch – and I found that I actually liked what they had to offer.

I still hated that ad campaign though and gladly they eventually took a different path with their advertising. Personally, I prefer the company who’s message says what they are offering me and why it’s great rather than the one that tries to be the lesser of two evils.

All that being said, a company forecasting losses of $2.1B, attributed to their mobile unit, has no right pointing fingers at anyone…

        http://www.nytimes.com/2014/09/18/business/international/sony-widens-expected-loss-to-2-14-billion.html?_r=0

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

They were not honest. I have to reset my mac all the time for updates. I get kernel panics more often than on my Surface Pro 2 (I’ve never once gotten a bsod on that). How are the Surface Pro ads untrue? You can do more on the surface pro than you can do on the macbook or the ipad. That is a fact. Not saying I don’t love my Macbook Air because I do.

      • houstonche - 10 years ago

I’d agree with the iPad, but what can a surface pro do that a full fledge laptop can’t??

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Act like a cintiq tablet with a digitizer.

  2. Thomas Lynch - 10 years ago

Show me a Sony phone that has 4 million pre-orders before officially going on launch. I don’t even think Samsung can claim that. Free advertisement is always a plus.

    • Exactly!! Sony’s lucky if they move 4 million units in a quarter let alone a day.

But once again the marketing message is to degrade and mock the iPhone. When are we gonna see an ad that compares a Sony phone to an HTC or Samsung? My guess is we’ll never see it because everyone’s after Apple’s success. They want it so desperately that they have no choice but to mock them.

    • Christian Borromeo - 10 years ago

with your logic (more costumers/users, the better), you’re like saying McDonald’s offer the best food in the world.

  3. nonyabiness - 10 years ago

It may be a nice phone, but it’s one problem is that it runs on Android. After returning 4 phones over the last 4-5 years, I know now that until Android gets the level of development seen with the iPhone, I will not be able to hop on board. Regardless of the hardware, If it’s got Android on it, it’s not as good as the iPhone.

    • nonyabiness - 10 years ago

      * 4 Android phones – SGS2, Galaxy Note 1, 2 & 3

      • your problem is touchwiz but why countinue to buy the same phone year after year if you dont like it?!

      • 01nb - 10 years ago

Anek hit the nail on the head. Touchwiz is terrible, there is no doubt. Android, especially the very close to stock flavor, is great. But Touchwiz is an overlay, created by Shamesung, to “enhance” the experience on their devices. They are horribly mistaken. You might really like the very close to stock versions found on the MotoX/Droid lines or Nexus devices. It’s far better than any of the MFG created overlays and only going to improve with Android L.

    • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Weird, I love Android on my Note 3. I enjoy being able to do anything I want with the phone and not be blocked into a walled garden.

      • Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

Said the Fandroid that just spews the usual Android FUD on an Apple site, get out.

      • Eli Matar - 10 years ago

Ahhhhh… Que dramatico. You like Android, use it.
Like Steve once said “if they like it, they’ll buy it. And if they don’, THEY WONT”.
Do you prefer to be in a walled HUGE garden or in a trashy world?

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

A trashy world, not that that is what android is at all. The only thing I will be missing about ios is the awesome continuity between ios and osx. I am pretty envious about that, I wish my Note 3 would connect with my macbook Air like the new iPhones can. Plus, Yosemite has been awesome in the developer preview.

Don’t get your panties in a knot, Edison. I just think ios is playing catch up (except in continuity). I still love my Macbook Air (as well as my Surface Pro 2). I know, I know, you’re just your typical self, a jet who can’t fathom that someone could enjoy something other than your precious.

      • thejuanald says: ” I just think ios is playing catch up…”

Let’s break that down. If you’re running against, for example, Usain Bolt, and he’s clearly in the lead then if you manage to “catch up” it sounds like you’re in a good position to at least match or possibly take the lead.

So if Android is Bolt why would he spend his time mocking runners he can clearly beat? Ever wonder why everyone — Nokia, Samsung, Microsoft, HTC, Motorola, etc — spend so much time beating up on Apple?

Clearly Apple has something the rest of the competition doesn’t have which is why you never see a Samsung commercial mocking anyone other than Apple.

      • houstonche - 10 years ago

Mark, apple has name power, and that’s what people are after. It does not correlate to hardware and software.

    • Jasmin Bang Fergusson - 10 years ago

I read that the latest versions of Android are actually more reliable than Ios. I have had the HTC One M7 and M8 and haven’t had a problem. I plan to get the Z3 for a better camera.

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

“If its got Android, its not as good as iPhone”

…is about the truest statement that could be spoken about smartphones.

  4. That’s just an ugly phone ugg. I don’t like the iPhone 6 from the back all that much but you stare at the front all day, and that’s just ugly to my eyes. I’m sure its a great phone, just didn’t stick out to me when I tried the Xperia phones at sony stores.

They make great TVs and laptops, not phones.

    • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Sony doesn’t make laptops anymore, and their TV section is failing. They sold the vaio section of the company and their tv’s are way too overpriced when Samsung and Sharp televisions are better in nearly every way.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

That being said, their gaming and movie divisions are flourishing. Sony needs to drop all the dead weight, like their mobile and television divisions.

      • Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

I call extreme BULLSHIT on that comment… Sony Bravia TV’s mop the floor with Scamsung crap TV’s, and I say that with 100% conviction because I’ve seen them side-by-side in many different stores, including Costco, where everyone said the Sony’s look better. Not to mention their support is vastly superior to Scamsung (their support is a joke), and the build quality cannot be matched.

Also, their phones are superior to Scamsung, not just in build, but their skin is much cleaner and more spartan than the dog that is TouchWiz, and they run buttery smooth.

      • Bruno Fernandes (@Linkb8) - 10 years ago

IMO Samsung TVs have decent enclosures, but their picture quality is nothing to brag about. I wouldn’t own one. Sony also does make better phones than Samsung, they’re just not in a position to be mocking Apple is all.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

I agree that TouchWiz is bad. That’s easy to get rid of permanently though. Samsung displays are the standard for quality, though. You haven’t seen a new Sony television for awhile, I don’t think. Sony used to be the high end in terms hardware in computers and televisions, that’s very true. Over the past 5 years or so, their quality has suffered horribly, without the premium you pay also dropping. Its disappointing because I used to love my old vaio, then my girlfriend bought one a few years ago and it was complete trash. When I went to buy my 65″ LED tv this year, I first went to Sony and the quality was just lacking in comparison to samsung and sharp, but the tv was several hundred dollars more than the others.

  5. Well, this kind of immature unprofessional ads were expected from shamesung but from Sony? Come on, you can do better! Also, the phone is just ugly.

  6. PMZanetti - 10 years ago

I’ve never heard of this phone. Is it new?

    • Christian Borromeo - 10 years ago

Don’t worry if you haven’t heard about this phone. You’re still normal. Like the majority, you’re probably thinking that only Apple and Samsung make smartphones, haha. But if you try to do your research, check tech sites, read blogs (other than those written by Apple disciples of course), and check comparisons, you’ll learn that, we’ll, the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is actually “Better than just being Bigger”, and it’s even better, in most respect, than the iPhone 6.

  7. puri517 - 10 years ago

We steal smartphone design, typography, the flower on the ad. And now they call it BETTER?
What’s about system preferences, than Jony Ive told in his bio book “at a certain point I realized that making products based on numbers is very simple. Make faster CDRom and you’ll be thinking that you’re the best. But the real products is something more than bigger numbers”.

    • xprmntr - 10 years ago

Yeah, I love how they chose the same color scheme and subject matter for their lock screen lol

      • Christian Borromeo - 10 years ago

Correction: My Sony Xperia SL released 2012 has been using that typography, “the flower” as one of the stock wallpapers, and design since. haha, idiots, i think it’s more of apple “stealing” the “flower wallpaper” than the other way around. Try to do your research, check tech sites, and read blogs (that are not written by Apple disciples) for once. haha!

  8. sonicsoundvw - 10 years ago

I love how everybody else keeps touting how many MP their cameras are, or the resolution of their screens like thats the #1 thing that determines quality. You can polish a potato, but when your done, what is it? Its still a potato. lol

  9. puri517 - 10 years ago

The device itself not enough. What the smartphone makes smart – is it’s OS. And what Sony says about the OS??

    • Tim Jr. - 10 years ago

Nothing, its about Apple, which is Sony’s first mistake in that ad. LOL

  10. Daniel L. Lau - 10 years ago

How come all you pro-iPhone guys forget to point out that the iPhone sports a 64-bit processor? That should be the beginning and the end to the comparison, and I haven’t seen a reference to it in weeks.

  11. This phone screams “NEVER HOLD ME IN LANDSCAPE MODE!”

  12. rettun1 - 10 years ago

Whoa cool black phone with a black background and a purple flower on it! Where have I seen that before…?

  13. breakingallillusionsx - 10 years ago

Mega pixels are just just up each new phone by Samsung and Sony and others to make their spec sheet look good and like they improved something. Megapixels really only come into play when really enlarging the photo and cropping. Apple is definitely taking the right route as they always do. Don’t just say it has high numbers it must be good. Rather advance the components and technology! That gives you the better photo.

  14. hayesunt - 10 years ago

Waterproof. Or water-resistant. Is one thing I would’ve liked on my 6+. Not going to ruin its thinness with a giant brick of a case for waterproofing.

  15. Its a phony…

  16. i bought a Oneplus One cause i wanted to try Android, and is a great phone Top Specs 2.5ghz Quadcore, 3Gb Ram Full HD Display, at first i really like it, but the more i use it the more a like my iPhone 5, I mean i still think is a good phone but Android is not for me, the way IOS works even if it “doesn’t have top specs” it’s just great, the best user experience out there, waiting for apple to release iPhone 6 Plus in my country.

  17. Salvador Sanchez - 10 years ago

I don’t need more pixels in my iPhone camera (I own a Nikon D800). I spend a lot of time in my office, home and car so my phone is always charging. What I really would like from my iPhone is that it was waterproof and it had better 4G reception. It can get annoying when companies from Samsung to Sony to Ikea mock Apple’s AD strategy, why can’t they come up with their own stuff?
PS: Apple….f**ck you for killing Aperture.

    • verizon2828 - 10 years ago

Fellow Nikon D800e and D4S user here…hopefully Aperture going away will be good in that you can transition to Lightroom! I looked at Aperture a while back and even used it for a bit on a friend’s Mac, but didn’t see the updates coming as quickly as I had wanted and future support seemed iffy because of that. Instead, I got embedded in Lightroom and I’m so glad that I did. I think you’ll like Lightroom better in the long run. Very easy learning curve and there’s tons of training available online for free! KelbyOne has great training videos as well if you’re a NAPP member.

      • darktanone - 10 years ago

I like and use Aperture and iPhoto and I’m holding out for their new photos app. If it’s anything like Finalcut X Pro, it’ll be worth the wait! I also don’t like the monthly subscription fee attached to Adobe Lightroom.

  18. peterlobl - 10 years ago

the strategy of mocking.. not doin wonders for sony’s profits

  19. puri517 - 10 years ago

If the company just copy ad and think that they done — it’s shows us they know nothing about how to make a really good product!

  20. Patrick G (@PatTheCarNut) - 10 years ago

When you’re on top, everyone wants to knock you off. If they were secure in their product, like Apple, they wouldn’t need to compare it in their OWN commercials and ads.

  21. rb1020 - 10 years ago

Really sony you want to mock somebody…..you forecasted a loss in your mobile division.
    http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/09/18/business/international/sony-widens-expected-loss-to-2-14-billion.html?_r=0&referrer=

  22. verizon2828 - 10 years ago

How many people ACTUALLY need a 20mp camera in their phone? And how many people actually PRINT photos taken from their phone? Sure you get the ability to crop in a little more, but when you’re only viewing the photo online, is it that much of a selling point? It’s hilarious to watch the other companies react and “try” to be relevant when none of them will EVER achieve a product launch like Apple.

  23. Bruno Fernandes (@Linkb8) - 10 years ago

This is like Burger King Mocking Morton’s, Peter Luger, Smith & Wolinski, pick your high-end steak house. Or Tab mocking a high-end wine label.

Sony. OMG. It’s a miracle that company is still alive.

  24. daygloe - 10 years ago

What sort of immature idiot are these companies aiming their products at fgs?

  25. Shaun Legacy - 10 years ago

Wow a purple flower on a black background as a wallpaper advertising your new phone. Not sure I’ve seen that before…

    • Christian Borromeo - 10 years ago

Probably on the Sony Xperia S/SL released 2 years ago? Sony’s already using those “flower on black BG” since 2012. It’s a shame I can’t post those photos here. ha!

  26. scumbolt2014 - 10 years ago

    Sony.

    Samsung.0

    • paul4ow - 10 years ago

As a consumer, you should be judging a company by the quality and value of its products, not by the number of drones it manages to extort money from.

  27. al0963 - 10 years ago

Is this 9to5 Mac or 9to5 android? Everyone here is android user, let me get out of here and go somewhere else, bunch of haters, bye, so long, have an Android life!!

  28. darktanone - 10 years ago

Apple just took away their BIGGEST advantage!

  29. paul4ow - 10 years ago

“same size as iPhone 6” clearly you Mac-cultists didn’t get the point of the ad. Despite having a similarly-sized screen the Z3 Compact is noticeably SMALLER than the iPhone 6, and closer in dimensions to the iPhone 5.
