Apple has finally released the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, and that means tons of new buyers are now becoming sellers—of their old phones. While it probably would have been best to sell that device a month ago to maximize its value, some people just didn’t have that luxury. The good news, though, is that many merchants are still offering very decent trade in values. My good condition 16 GB iPhone 5 falls between $150 and $200 depending on where I look.
One of those merchants is Amazon, which is claiming values up to $400 for a top condition iPhone 5s. Interestingly, it looks like device trades are really picking up, with the official Amazon tech deals Twitter saying that they’re seeing as many as two iPhone trade ins per minute. Pretty impressive. Rough calculations suggest that the resale market may account for 1M iPhone sales for the season ending Dec 31st.
Personally I find you get way better prices on eBay. A little bit of a PITA but if you want top dollar that seems the best place to sell. Anyone got any other places to check out as a seller to get top dollar?

Swappa.com is a great site – and much lower fees than eBay.
Amazon does provide good value for trade ins. However, they don’t accept the kind of iPad mini I have for the program. It is a mini 2, Retina, 128 GB. They accept all other Apple devices. I had a chat with an Amazon representative and she confirmed this was true. Does anybody know what that would be the case? Thanks in advance for your help.

I have 12,000 sales on eBay since about 2004. I would of recommended eBay up until about 4 years ago. The multiple high fees and the incredible amount of scammers with removal of all the protection safeguards that use to be in place really make eBay not worth it for causal sellers or high priced items.
Interesting. What are the protection safeguards that have been lifted? My understanding was that If a buyer purchases via PayPal, that as long as the product is delivered (which is insured), you are covered as a seller.
Apparently my iPhone 5S white 64 gb is worth half the black version. I’ll do a lot better elsewhere.
I locked in at $250 per phone yesterday at AMAZON for 2 unlocked iPhone 5 16GB. $500 for two year old phones is bananas.
considering we paid $600+ for our iPhones, this isn’t really a good deal, none of them are, (you might think it only cost $199 or whatever you paid up front, but, through subsidizing, over your 2-year contract, you paid full price for that phone). I’m keeping my iPhone 5 this time, use it as an iPod touch, it still works fine.
I bought my 64 GB iPhone 6 on-line from AT&T as a premier customer. In-store, I traded-in an old 32 GB iPhone 4 (no longer receiving iOS updates as of iOS 8) which was only being used as an iPod Touch for streaming radio in a 30-pin Logitech speakerdock and got $200 in an AT&T gift card. I still have my previous iPhone 5 and it’s purpose is now as an iPod Touch for streaming radio in an 8-pin JBL speakerdock. I was very surprised that without any “work” I was able to get $200 on a 4 year old smartphone.
Those sites that offer good prices like to downgrade it once they receive it and then offer you less. eBay is the best way to go although they do nail you wit fees as well as more fees from PayPal. That sucks!

Keep your iPhone in great condition and then just sell it on Craigslist! You can get much more on Craigslist than on Amazon for your one year old iPhone 5s. This year I sold my AT&T iPhone 5s for $340 on CellCashier, which was also about 10% more than Amazon offered me. It is all about shopping around for the best price!
