Skype launches redesigned Mac app ahead of OS X Yosemite

Skype today has begun rolling out a redesigned version of its Mac client, bringing an enhanced look that better fits the upcoming design aesthetic of OS X Yosemite. The new design also brings the Mac app more in line with the recently redesigned iPhone and iPod touch version of Skype. The new look’s most significant new feature fixes a common #FirstWorldProblem: having to figure out how to send someone an instant message during a voice or video call. Now, the new Skype 7.0 update brings the split-screen view shown above. Improved multi-person video calls, easier sharing, and chat syncing across devices rounds out the update. Skype 7.0 for Mac is a free download from the Skype website. Some more screenshots are below:

I see they went out of their way to make sure that the sidebar isn’t translucent so that the app isn’t visually consistent with the rest of the OS. At least it’s not as bad as Skype for iOS.

The first screenshot still looks like a Mavericks app. I’ve always thought the Skype UI is weird and unlike anything else (not in a good way). The interaction design behind Skype isn’t logical, it’s very cumbersome to do the simplest things compared to, say, iMessage/Facetime/whatsapp.

Im a fan of the new skype it brings a lot of helpful new features and changes, however the sidebar is not translucent which i think makes it look ugly and out of place from the rest of the applications that have been updated to support the new Yosemite look, also the new online icon in the menu bar has been changed and i personal like the old one better. For those wondering the new Skype 7 supports dark mode.

  4. Microsoft is still blocking Video calls in 1080p in Mac OS. Why no-one is doing something with this?
They simply want to force people to use Windows.
