Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite now available as a free download

As was mentioned earlier today during Apple’s special event, Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite is now available as a free upgrade for users running OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and 10.9 Mavericks. To get the update, you can head to the Mac App Store or, alternatively, simply click this direct link.

OS X Yosemite comes with a redesigned look and feel to bring the OS aesthetic more in line with iOS, as well as several groundbreaking new features like iCloud Drive, Continuity, revamped Spotlight, widgets for Notification Center, and more. Notably, however, some of these features require newer hardware.

Mac OS X Yosemite has been in testing for many months now, since its introduction at WWDC 2014 in June. Each beta has ironed out more and more bugs, leading up to the most recent introduction of a few GM versions.

    Is the release build 14A388a?

  2. Ario (@ArioYazdan) - 9 years ago

Do I have to clean install if I’m running beta?

    • Good question. The update isn’t appearing in my Updates tab via the App Store.

      • Landy (@Soydepr) - 9 years ago

        same here

      • Bruce Motta - 9 years ago

Beta tester’s best wait for the final update…will be quicker than full DL..u already have the candy.. so no hurry…btw also check for iTunes 12.0.1

    • madmen8 - 9 years ago

I’m also looking for an answer to this.

Same here, not sure if i need to download the full version. It won’t let me yet anyways.

        Apple Public Beta FAQ Page:

How do I get a shipping version of OS X back on my Mac?
Always back up your computer before installing pre-release software. To get a shipping release of OS X on your Mac, you can simply install the final version of the software you are testing when it appears in Software Update.

So YES, you will need to update to the final release.

      • DubDJ - 9 years ago

Good stuff, thanks for the answer. I’m still downloading, might do a fresh install.

      • kelax - 9 years ago

@madmen8 – read what it says – “simply install the final version of the software you are testing when it appears in Software Update” – that means the final version of the beta software you are given to test is what will be made public. So we’re on the same build as what is now in the App Store.

      • Landy (@Soydepr) - 9 years ago

update tells me i am already running latest version

    • tekenology - 9 years ago

Not showing as an update for me

    • Ario (@ArioYazdan) - 9 years ago

I just chatted with Apple support, and they said just install it on top of the Beta 6 version. Make sure to get a time machine backup first

      • Ady Márton - 9 years ago

Was on beta 6, update didn’t show up. Downloaded the full installer, which updated my Yosemite to the public version (build 14A389). My settings and even my open windows were preserved.

    • “We will have an update released for our beta users within the next 12 hours! Also please know the Beta version you are running is the same as the final release, the update will install the recovery partition and change your version to reflect the public release.”
This is what i got after contacting apple store!

    • Jeremy (@_JeremyBlake) - 9 years ago

Just search for Yosemite in the MAS. :)

  3. Sam Shafer - 9 years ago

If I have the latest GM, do I need to download the version on the app store? I don’t think I need to, just making sure.

  4. singingfriar - 9 years ago

I keep getting “This item is temporarily unavailable. Try again later.” when I try to download it.

  5. yup.. get an error when i try and download it. “the item is temporarily unavailable”

  6. Letian Yang - 9 years ago

I would assume they’re still doing work updating the Mac App Store, since Mavericks just got pulled off but the front page is still not highlighting anything new.

  7. Christian Ortiz - 9 years ago

Not seeing it yet through Update mechanism. Running public beta 6.

    • tekenology - 9 years ago

If you have beta, you don’t need to update. You should have the GM and that is the official version

      • Aaron M. Bielert - 9 years ago

A few problems with this, the developer beta GM3 was 14A388a where as the public beta 6 was labeled 14A388b. An update would still be need for public beta users and the seed program site has already been updated if you wish to continue getting beta of future Yosemite versions and how to download a program to get them…

not true you need download full installer

    • technole (@technole1) - 9 years ago

What I did to upgrade over Yosemite Beta 6 was go into the app store purchases, right click and hide the Yosemite Beta from my downloads list. The release version became available to download after that.

  8. eim23x - 9 years ago

Same result click and get the following “This item is temporarily unavailable. Try again later.”

  9. madmen8 - 9 years ago

I want 8.1 so bad I can taste it.

I did a diagnostic with Apple Care support and the tech rep said “Holy Cow! Your phone must be running hot, it has an average of 12 crashes per day and insufficient ram warnings almost constantly. Do a total restore and set up as new, or wait till 8.1”

    my reply:

    “aw Shit”

    • madmen8 - 9 years ago

PS, I am sorry I posted that in here (10.10 Yosemite release) but while I am waiting for this to clear up, I can confidently say, there is little I need fixed on my GM seed of OS X, I’m far more desperate for the iOS update.

    • So I’m not the only one!

  10. Oshri Avitan - 9 years ago

not anymore… apple servers are down! the app store gives an error says “the item is temporary unavailable” try again later. bummer.

  11. theagentmike - 9 years ago

lets wait a few more minutes for it to appear then try downloading again..

  12. Romeo Hermann - 9 years ago

says unavailable in your country aka the U.S.

  13. This is just a really bad apple. They should have all the bug removed before they tried to
release Yosemite to the public. I would prefer them to have release it tomorrow. C’mon APPLE!!!!!!

    • madmen8 - 9 years ago

it hasn’t been released to the public. You’ll see it in the App Store, on the home page, when it is.

  14. madmen8 - 9 years ago

    5.16gb seems hefty no?

  15. Les Francoeur - 9 years ago

Yeah. Not so much. The App preview page now appears but when you hit the Free button it says “This item is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.” It has been saying this all day. Heads are going to roll.

    • madmen8 - 9 years ago

it hasn’t been released to the public. You’ll see it in the App Store, on the home page, when it is.

  16. It’s not been released through the ‘Updates’ tab on either Mavericks or Yosemite beta yet. Shouldn’t be necessary to do a clean install if you’re running beta.

  17. Finally downloading!

  18. It’s downloading just fine over here.

  19. Jason Ames - 9 years ago

Mine just started downloading, it’s going slow, but it seems to be working now.

  20. drtyrell969 - 9 years ago

It appears to have been yanked from the store.

  21. Edison Wrzosek - 9 years ago

Still not showing for me up in Canada on my Mavericks system, nor my Yosemite Beta 6 test system… C’MON!!! I WANT THIS SO BAD!!!

Then, iOS 8.1 madness on Monday, happy times :)

  22. Scott Bessel (@sbessel) - 9 years ago

First time seeing it up close, and wow, I am so not impressed.
I hate the fact they are going back in time with the graphics. Mac and IOS always had the leading edge 3d icons and display graphics, in my opinion is version is a huge step backwards. I really just looks horrible, flat and boring. I hate to pull the “Steve” card, but I can’t see that Steve would ever approve this look.
I hope the new features work well and are worth it.
    Welcome back to 1990.

  23. I installed the final version. Why do I still have feedback assistant on dock?

  24. Landy (@Soydepr) - 9 years ago

does continuity needs 8.1 i downloaded pages update and i have latest yosemitie beta and no continuity

    • Dashaun Shepherd - 9 years ago

2011 MacBooks and earlier will not work with Handoff :[ very unfortunatly no low-energy bluetooth

      • Landy (@Soydepr) - 9 years ago

mine is MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2011)

      • acelerat - 9 years ago

MBA 2011 has a low energy bluetooth chipset. In fact, it has the same bluetooth/wifi hardware as MBA 2012.

      • lelousticleplus - 9 years ago

So if MBA 2011 has a low energy bluetooth chipset, the same as MBA 2012, why is it impossible to have Handoff on a MBA 2011??? I’m quite angry…

      • lelousticleplus - 9 years ago

Maybe there’s a simple trick to activate Handoff on 2011 Macs with Bluetooth 4 LE?

  25. Can i install this to a partition in my mac like two os x in one mac?

  26. enjoy with this, i’m staying with mavericks

  27. Cameron Scott - 9 years ago

I spent about an hour trying to figure out how this SMS continuity works. I now discovered it won’t work until iOS 8.1 is released next week. Ranks up there with HealthKit, iPhoto, iCloud Drive, etc. Seriously what is going on at Apple in their software department?

I love apple but the past few years have upset me tremendously with programs being stripped of features, being released without promised features, or completely neglected and distracted. More than anything, a lot of things have felt like step backwards from the multi-year absence of iDisk to half-baked products like Final Cut and iWork.

  28. acelerat - 9 years ago

MBA 2011 and MBA 2012 have the same Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi chipsets. Continuity is not supported in MBA 2011. Looks like a pure marketing move from Apple :(

  29. Aaron M. Bielert - 9 years ago

Anyone else have there Notification Center widgets disappear after the upgrade from Beta 6 to Final. My Social is not working either. Everything else is working the same, all that changed was build number it feels like.

  30. Mr. Grey (@mister_grey) - 9 years ago

Okay, this will probably be asked a lot over the next few days, but maybe some of you beta testers know …

How do we get rid of the ugly blue colour on the folders? There must be a hack or something somewhere.
A hack for getting rid of the transparent top bar would be appreciated also.

Why does apple have to change these things and then give us no f*cking option to go back to the way it was previously anyway?

  31. adriancomposer - 9 years ago

Final release build number is 14A389

  32. Mony Sambath - 9 years ago

Its not an update…the install is on the feature page…

  33. Samoan Joe - 9 years ago

Anyone know how to turn off the Macbook pro screen with the lid open while using external monitors? On
    Mavericks this worked just fine:

    http://gizmodo.com/5938452/a-trick-to-make-using-an-external

Now no dice… anyone know a way to keep the screen off with the lid open?

    To execute in Terminal:
    sudo nvram boot-args=”iog=0x0″

    To undo in Terminal:
    sudo nvram -d boot-args

Once you type it into terminal I believe you need to enter your password. I then restart my machine. Now the TRICK is to either restart your machine with the lid already closed (hit restart then slam the lid!) OR turn the machine on for the first time (then quickly slam the lid!) once you are past the login screen you can open the lid.

  34. Tona Spalato (@mojSplit) - 9 years ago

Trying all day and nite, but just giving me an error. Maybe because I simple love SL! ;)

  35. media_lush (@media_lush) - 9 years ago

Okay, been playing with Yosemite for a couple of hours and I must admit that it’s considerably faster; Safari especially is noticeably quicker…. however I have two major gripes.
The first one is that tab favicons have disappeared… I always have loads of tabs open and they shrink in size to remain on the window and are each distinctive – the blogger favicon is instantly recognisable etc… now they’re a generic grey and don’t shrink so you have to use your mouse to horizontally scroll them like the iPad version.
The other thing is that the tone of grey is so bland with no outline to it it’s difficult to see what windows are behind … Safari did with this before and soon added favicons again so I guess they will again… otherwise what’s the point of mac specific sites bothering to implement them in their sites.
Preview has this weird little thing that allows you to hold a signed signature via your webcam… haven’t figured it out yet

  36. Harsh Agrawal - 9 years ago

Is there any direct download link?? My downloading failed at almost 98%… Sigh!

  37. Tona Spalato (@mojSplit) - 9 years ago

After ten tries, I am giving up as am getting some kind of error.

Any suggestion except keep trying? :D

  38. Rick Sivernell - 9 years ago

the new OS X looks like a two year designed it, it is garbage. I need to ether get a way to make item look like OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) or reinstall OS X 10.9 (Mavericks). They had a nice one till the screwed the pouch.
