Apple TV updated with Hallmark’s ‘Feeln’ and A&E’s ‘FYI’ channels

Apple updated the Apple TV today with two additional channels: Hallmark Card’s Feeln network and A&E’s FYI network. The Feeln network includes “family-friendly movies, documentaries, and short films” according to its description. The FYI network owned by A&E and formerly called The Biography Channel “features lifestyle programming, with a mix of reality, culinary, home renovation and makeover series.” Both new channels are available automatically or by rebooting the Apple TV.

Hallmark Card’s Feeln network, formerly called SpritClips, is a subscription-based network for movies and TV shows with monthly plans starting at $3.99. Apple TV users can sign in with an existing paid account, or new customers can subscribe directly through the channel. Rates through the channel include $3.99/month billed annually at $47.99 or $4.99/month billed monthly at the higher rate.

Currently the network features movies including Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Babe, Free Willy, Grease, and Annie. The network also includes its own original programming. Feeln offers an iOS app on the App Store for subscribers; you can find out more about Feeln through the Apple TV channel or the network’s website.

FYI, formerly The Biography Channel and Bio, features reality shows and drama series including Unlivable, House vs. House, and Midnight Feast. The channel belongs to the A&E network which includes other Apple TV channels like A&E, Lifetime, and The History Channel. Cable subscribers can access the channel’s full content on Apple TV with the usual sign-in process for paid cable customers.

Compatible TV providers include Bright House, DirecTV, Dish, Optimum, Time Warner Cable, Verizon Fios, and a long list of supported regional providers as well. Some content is available without verifying a subscription.

Just what the overwhelming majority of users were waiting on!

I am enjoying all the channels, but the problem is that I have to request permission from Time Warner in order to use all of them. I’m trying to get away from Time Warner. Realizing things change and so is TV as we know it, it’s probably just a matter of time before Cable TV falls apart. One day Google and Apple will buy up all the cable lines deliver the best internet experience on the planet.

    • Have you seen the market cap of the cable companies lately? Neither Google nor Apple has the capital to acquire the big boys. The used to, but they’ve let the situation slide and it’s a bit late now. All the big players are also diversifying, getting even bigger by taking on movie studios for example.

What are you talking about? AAPL could buy TWC 3 times over with just its cash on hand and still have about $35B left.

@rtd5943 That’s just for one regional cable provider. Comcast’s market cap is $140b.

So what’s your point lowtolerance? If you want examples of more than one then Apple could buy TWC, Cablevision, Charter, Direct TV, Dish, and Cox. Again, with all cash. Not that they want or need to, but hey do have the resources.

So FYI (an A&e) network is supported by directv but the A&e app on the appletv is not supported by directv?

    Makes no sense.

I don’t have any paid tv service so I guess I’m out of luck using any of them. Assuming that you have to have some sort of paid tv service to use them, why would you since you could just watch the channel using cable? I guess I don’t understand the point.

The point is view on demand. If you just have the channel, you view it when they air it, with this you get to see at when you want.

    • crisrod63 - 9 years ago

View on demand, not waiting for the show to air. You chose when to see it as opposed to being tied to a schedule.

  5. I love my Apple TV, but it has become a dumping ground for channels with no uniform way to subscribe, search, or surf for programs. Can I watch a show on the Netflix, Hulu, Fox App? Which one has full episodes or season 4? Which channels work for cord cutters? At the moment, you have to search through several slow menu layers to answer these questions. Come on apple, give us spotlight search on the Apple TV. Give us a uniform subscription point. Organize these channels into a simpler uniform interface for browsing across channels.

You clearly have no idea what it would take to implement what you’re talking about. No Apple device can do that.
