Facebook launches dedicated ‘Groups’ app for iPhone

Today Facebook has added yet another app to its growing portfolio. Facebook Groups is its latest standalone app with features dedicated to managing and interacting with groups on the iPhone. Unlike its approach to Facebook Messenger, however, the social network says it will not remove existing group features from the primary Facebook app.

“Follow your groups here or on Facebook, whichever is easier for you.”

If you are a frequent user of Facebook’s Groups feature, the dedicated app does allow you to do a few interesting things. For instance, Facebook Group will allow you to create homescreen icons (like apps) for your favorite groups to quickly access them without first launching the app.

Additionally, Facebook says its new Groups app will allow users to focus on the following actions:

* Create a group for just about anything.
* Share information, post photos and links, and stay in touch.
* Discover and join new groups for whatever you’re into.

Facebook Groups joins the social network’s existing apps including the primary Facebook app, Messenger, Paper, Pages Manager, Slingshot (its Snapchat-like app), Rooms (its forums app), and Mentions (for verified users). Facebook, of course, also owns Instagram (and its Hyperlapse appand its Bolt app) as well as WhatsApp.

You can check out Facebook Groups for iPhone for free on the App Store.

Like a need another Facebook app. Is it really that hard to make one app that does all of this, Groups, Messages and Facebook… Geez…

Exactly, guess they didn’t get the hint. I’ll just download, delete, and leave a negative rating so that they get the hint that going thru multiple apps is NOT a good design idea.

Looks like the Game Center icon.

To me it looks like Facebook wants to dominate the number of installed apps on iOS. Don’t forget they also own WhatsApp so this one is their forth app people will have installed on their iPhones/iPads.
