Microsoft’s new Cortana ad mocks Siri for lack of contextual reminders and traffic reports

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUJfVZzxu3M

Microsoft has released yet another Cortana advertisement that mocks Siri for lacking contextual reminders and real-time traffic reports. Microsoft pokes fun at the personal voice assistant by claiming that it “just got bigger,” a sarcastic reference to the larger screen sizes on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Perhaps the Redmond-based company is overlooking all of the new features Siri gained in iOS 8.

This is far from the first Siri vs. Cortana ad that Microsoft has released. Nokia joined in the Siri bashing with a pair of ads released in September, promoting Cortana’s ability to automatically remind users when to leave for appointments based on calendar and traffic data. Microsoft also ran a Siri vs. Cortana ad featuring the HTC One (M8) after running its first ad back in July.

Cortana is Microsoft’s personal voice assistant launched on Windows Phone earlier this year, with similar functionality as Siri on the iPhone and iPad. Cortana goes one step further by allowing third-party applications to complete tasks and answer questions as well. For instance, you can ask Cortana to add a film to your Hulu watch list with natural language.

The latest statistics reveal that Windows Phone held 3.3% global market share in the third quarter, however.

  1. OK, I must admit, that’s a good ad.

This is a horrible ad, funny, but horrible. I went to hear if Cortana’s voice was that good because that was a wicked good voice for a computer approximation. I looked up an actual demo and its just the same as siri I will admit probably of the same quality, but it burns me that they use a voice actor and play it off as there phones voice.

You beat me to it, Israel. I was gonna say that, as an Apple fan, I’m probably supposed to be outraged at this mocking ad from Microsoft, but hey … it actually is pretty funny ;-)

Mocking Siri is like shooting Apples in a barrel. Only thing I ever ask is “how much wood can a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?” Lots of clever answers to that one, but for real usage Siri is years behind Google Now with no hope of ever catching up.

    • hmurchison - 9 years ago

Anyone can say this if they have no plan of telling us Siri users where we are so far behind in.

    • iSRS - 9 years ago

No hope? Wow, what life must be like for you. The only area Apple is lagging others is software. Guess what? Easiest to implement when Apple can do it their way. We will get contextual aware Siri, and Google Now functionality in Siri.

What life must be like for you, walking around in a delusional daze about what your iPhone can do.

Personally I don’t care for voice control, but if I did I sure as hell wouldn’t own an iPhone.

Crap, stripped out the actual messages…the first two should say ‘Message from Tuesday night’. The last is ‘Message from Thursday morning’.

  4. Ah, traffic reports. The most useless feature that people like to brag about having. Let’s see, you’re stuck in traffic and then get a traffic report. Wow. You are stuck on the freeway with no offramp in sight and you get a traffic report. Wow. What the fuck good does that do you? Don’t people listen to the radio in their cars?

    • hmurchison - 9 years ago

Hear Hear. I’ve received crappy directions from Google Nav and Apple Nav. I’m not trusting my commute to these tools. Too often the Tech industry tries to sell a Jalopy as a Jaguar.

    • OneOkami (@OneOkami) - 9 years ago

If I’m stuck in traffic and then get a traffic report I’ll know how far and how severe the traffic is. Based on that, I can make a decision to sit though it or I can plan a detour at the next exit. That’s very useful to me.

If I have an appointment to be somewhere at a certain time then getting alerted to leave early because of developing traffic would be very useful to me.

If I’m on the road and planning to take a certain route somewhere then getting a traffic report on the route could show me that route is looking bad traffic-wise and I will take a different route to avoid it. That’s very useful to me.

      • If you’re already on the road and stuck in traffic, and THEN you get an alert, what good does it do? You’re already stuck with nowhere to go. Kinda pointless tech if you ask me. Plus, I already know all the shortcuts around where I live. I can make it from Williamsburg, Virginia all the way to the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel without getting on I64. It helps if you know where you’re going and listening to the radio, which gives much faster traffic conditions.

It is a good ad. Release Cortana for iOS, and I’d totally download it.

  6. thisisasticup - 9 years ago

https://vimeo.com/112085940 Seems Cortana is actually behind.

    • thisisasticup - 9 years ago

Also, iOS tells you how long it will lake to get to your destination in today view in Notification center.

    • airmanchairman - 9 years ago

This for a reality check, never mind the advertising b*ll*cks…

  7. Apple needs to step up their acquisition game to shore this up. Maybe in a few years they’ll just buy what’s left of Microsoft. ;)

  8. Danny Harding - 9 years ago

It’s funny that so many commercials have to try to bash on Apple so that their product will seem any good. In and of itself it’s not good enough, so you have to point out the few places that it’s better than apple. In my opinion, that’s a lame way to do business. Just make a product that is good enough that you don’t need to compare it at all!

    • houstonche - 9 years ago

Thats not smart advertising, especially when apple is on top. you want to break that mindset in consumers.

don’t forget apple did the same thing in their mac vs. pc ads when microsoft based computing was the standard for homes.

Take surface for instance, it keeps getting better and better, I’ve heard a lot of good about it, but it doesn’t sell well because it has microsoft in front of its name. they need to show why it outperforms for the iPad in their ads to help sway consumers. its not personal, just business.

At least this ad makes some sense. The older ad where the guy says, “Cortana, remind me to pick up flowers the next time a go by a florist.” is pretty stupid. So if he never goes by a florist, his wife won’t ever get flowers. Nice husband there, douche nozzle.

Not having Sori is better than having Siri.

Siri is ANOTHER example of Apple releasing products that fail.

So glad I switched to the Samsung Galaxy S5.

    • Dave Huntley - 9 years ago

And yet Apple cannot make enough to keep up with sales while Samsung is cutting back. How odd sad herb the troll, once again your trolling just shows what an idiot you are.

      • herb02135go - 9 years ago

People are buying the new Apple phone but it’s not because of Sori. It’s in spite of it.

    • Mustafa Çağdaş Çizer - 9 years ago

And yet you are still here commenting about an article from a site that no longer conserns you about an ad that two different os’s voice assistant. Glad you come by btw.

  11. Dave Huntley - 9 years ago

All these voice response systems were going nowhere until Siri came alomg and again Cortana even looks like Siri. I am sure there will be leapfrogging over features, but it is another product that Apple put new life into. None of the other were bothered before.
Cortana however, if someone has access to it, can probably be asked why no one buys Windows phones despite what her ad says. The clowns at MS should probably be asking if their ads like this work when their sales are stubbornly dismal. Surface ads are the same – but are proven NOT to bring in customers. Samsungs mocking ads preceded the poor performance of the S5 comparitively. Shouldn’t these marketing wonksrealize they need to try something new? Thats what they get the big bucks for… As a tip, I would suggest they don’t hire herb the troll as their spokesperson.

This is just Microsoft copying Samsung.

  13. Francis Wernet - 9 years ago

this is really funny, but I don’t think the iphone is just about the voice thing, so isn’t windows phone, that still hasn’t gained any serious market share. I like my iphone or the ios eco system because off all the posibilities that I have using it. That is still hard to find on other platforms like android, and especialy windows phone. If microsoft want to get a piece of the apple, they have to start building there own phone, and not he ugly huge nokia phones they are selling now, come up with something nice ellegant, maybe a surface phone? that would make me interested in windows phone

    • herb02135go - 9 years ago

Francis, have you actually used a Samsung phone on the last few years?
This site is full of Apple trolls who can’t even spell Samsung and have never used it, yet they think they are experts.

I have used both companies’ products quite recently.
Apple has the cult following but Samsung has the real innovation.

      • Mustafa Çağdaş Çizer - 9 years ago

I really wonder what real innovation is? I mean note series are great. That is something that samsung really developed on itself but it is not for ”any” user. Regular users dont buy note not everyone wants that gimmicks not everyone NEEDS those gimmicks. Lets take touch id versus samsungs fingerprint for example; you dont swipe or position your finger for touch id it works way better than samsungs. Thats something a regular user cares. Im just giving an example. Most of the people doesnt know what quad hd means and cant tell the diiference between full hd. Maybe you can I get that but what I am saying is its like dating you need to look attractive first for people to look at your personality (os) and Apple’s os is simple has a reputation of stability, trust. There will be lots of people who likes samsung htc or microsoft but when you use an apple device It gets into you I know that because before my apple devices I used a lot off different phones. They were all beautiful, fun to use but the brand nothing to offer to me to buy their product again. Apple does that, they have an amazing marketing team and a designing team to make that happen. Most of non ios users think that Apple users are just buying product but that year by year stable growth of apple and declining growth of samsung points to one thing. Samsungs ”real innovations” are not attracting people they buy 6+, m8, g3, z3 or whatever. I am not against samsung or anything. I woudld like them to push apple to the limits so both companies can make better products.

  14. Jay Presley - 9 years ago

It’s pretty legit, actually. I would love it if Siri was that smart.

  15. cjt3007 - 9 years ago

I think they forgot to cut out the corners to make them rounded like the face and back of the phone is…
