Honor among thieves? Huawei calls its new smartphone the 6 Plus

Huawei today unveiled its latest smartphone at an event in Beijing and naturally the company named the follow up to its previous generation Honor 6 device, the Honor 6 Plus. Creative.

Apart from the name there aren’t many other similarities between the Android-powered Honor 6 Plus and Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus. That is, however, other than the same size 5.5-inch display and the exact same color options (as pictured above). The previous generation Honor 6 sported a 5-inch display.

The Honor 6 Plus includes a 5.5-inch 1080p LCD, Huawei’s Kirin 925 octa-core chip, up to 32GB of onboard storage, NFC, 3G of RAM, and a 3,600 mAh battery. Its standout feature is dual rear 8-megapixel cameras that allow for a number of camera improvements and new software features over previous generation hardware.

The device will sell for around $320 USD unsubsidized for the entry-level 16GB model, or closer to $400 for access to a model with LTE, NFC, and the iPhone-like gold color option.

Last year Apple paid Huawei more than $100m for using Huawei’s 3G/LTE patents. What a stupid westerner, do you think Nortel/Motolora/Lucent are still leading the telecommunication industry, it’s Huawei/Ericssion lead!

      • coolfactor - 9 years ago

Hmm, I don’t recall anybody calling you a stupid easterner. Please leave the personal attacks out of your comments and be part of the community, will ya?

  3. dvinder42 - 9 years ago

    Typical China. No innovation.

    • FAME © - 9 years ago

      Ignorant.

      • dvinder42 - 9 years ago

ok. make that … little innovation, as absolutes are pointless. if you see nothing wrong with what huawei does i would claim you are the ignorant one.

Who has a screen SAPPHIRE on the market?
      Apple or Huawei? …….
It is Huawei Ascend Mate 7 Monarch ;-)

I worked with Chinese factories for 5 years. It’s in their nature to steal. If you don’t QA every single element of a product they find a way to cut corners just to save one cent. When we had something made, we had to stamp our logo into the mold to keep other factories from stealing the part.

      • patthecarnut - 9 years ago

And exactly WHY companies should NOT do business with China. I don’t get how this is not obvious to CEO’s, aside from Shark Tank Kevin O’Leary who will die with a dollar in his grip. If they will steal, who’s to say they aren’t doing something to the hardware to spy or watch. They are already killing our kids and pets with lead…they don’t care…they will systematically work their way in.

What a bullshit product. Copy cats. Non innovator. Second hand product. For people who love the TRASH. Hey, some people really like trash ;-)

    • Chengliang Pan - 9 years ago

Hahaha, what you said is what moto/lucent/nortel said 10 years ago. Where are they now?

    • Nycko Heimberg - 9 years ago

Yes TRASH and copy cats !!!! :-(
But Huawei took an advance of at least 9 months on Apple and its screens Sapphire ;-)

    • jrev2020 - 9 years ago

Hahahaha…as if Apple isn’t a copycat company? When you look up innovation in the technology dictionary it says “Something Apple has never had”.

      • herb02135go - 9 years ago

And a photo of Tim Cook thinking WTF?

        Lol

  5. Screw you copycats! This is so ignorant of the whole world!

If China successfully steals a technology to make a Jet fighter how much more they can’t do it to a cellular phone.

    • herb02135go - 9 years ago

You can read about it on 9to5JetFighter.

If you’re intention is to hang out here and trash everyone’s comments because you don’t agree with what they are saying, you’re going to be sitting here a long time wasting yours.

      • bdkennedy11: Don’t worry about him. He’s a chinese/korean paid prick to post garbage here.

  7. Felipe Cajolo - 9 years ago

A clear evidence is a recent conviction of a Chinese engineer sentenced to prison because of trying to smuggle documents containing designs of F-35 fighter jet.

I guess anything with a number and the word “plus” is perceived as a threat to Apple.

    Watch out, Cost Plus Imports!
Batteries Plus is about to get served!

  9. annnnnd…. queue the law suit

  10. clintaustin26 - 9 years ago

LOL. At this point I think it’s obvious they’re actually intentionally trolling Apple. It’s beyond mere design ripoff. It’s all just free publicity. They aren’t even trying to hide it or even half heartedly deny it like Samsung does. They could have at least used a plus symbol. I mean, I don’t think Apple has a claim to the term “plus,” but to name it “6 plus” while styling it exactly like an iPhone at the exact same time Apple has their 6 plus flagship device out on the market is incredibly ballsy. Even the color palette of the icons. At least change the colors around. Gotta give it to China. They just don’t GAF. Hilarious. I like the clock/weather widget, though.

    • herb02135go - 9 years ago

Wish Apple had some balls to innovate.
      Why stick with the flock?
Widgets are great Does Apple’s new phone have them?

      • deasystems - 9 years ago

Yes, it does. Why not learn about the thing you wish to disparage?

      • You have anything better on your crapsung copied phone. Anything. Everything there is just worse.

  11. herb02135go - 9 years ago

The largest photography website says it has some very good specs and says it looks like an Android phone.

The comments in this discussion make me want to run for the hills!

Fact: This legitimizes Apple by directly playing two of their cards – appearance and branding.

Fact: It’s likely a decent device and suitable for many people, but its not an iPhone.

  13. nofo - 9 years ago

The shameless consistency of this incompetent mindset of making profit off other brand names and true innovators’ successes is outstanding! These fellas must have a severe lack of self respect, to say the least. In all seriousness, I have heard shopkeepers asking new, clueless customers whether if they wanted the “authentic, expensive iPad” or the “normal iPad”, which would be a Samsung or a Huawei or some other uneasily identifiable Asian brand.
I expect this to turn into: would you like the authentic iPhone 6 or the normal one? Holy moly.

    • coolfactor - 9 years ago

Yup. I’ve been befriending several Filipinos that live in Singapore and Hong Kong and been witnessing first-hand just how sleazy the Chinese merchants are. They don’t care about quality, they just want to make a buck. Sad state that our world has gotten to, but then again, maybe it’s always been like that… certain people care about quality and authenticity and others don’t. I know that I always will.

      • nofo - 9 years ago

Same here, I’d rather change my industry altogether than make shitty things or blatant clones of better products. My problem with these people is the fact that they – unlike European or American businesses that infringe on patents – wouldn’t try to conceal what they stole, but rather try to fool clueless customers into thinking that they’ve just made something like the original or even better.
I am not sure whether if that’s a cultural or an educational problem though…

  14. patthecarnut - 9 years ago

Apparently “Honor” means something totally different in China

  15. jruss75 - 9 years ago

China hasn’t had an original idea in pretty much forever. They have either outsourced (from Russia) or stolen (from the U.S.) ALL of “their” technology for the past 50+ years. Literally ALL of their military and consumer tech comes from somewhere else. Pathetic!!!
