Apple showcases iPad with creative Smart Cover storefront display at Apple Store

Apple has had some interesting retail storefront displays for the iPhone, iPad and Mac in the past, but its latest effort all but tops the cake. At the iconic Apple Store on Regent Street in London, the Cupertino-based company now has a row of iPads on display with colorful Smart Covers that automatically open and close.

This video (from Vid.Me) does not explain how the Smart Covers are able to move on their own, although magnets underneath the shelf are almost certainly involved. Anyone who has used a Smart Cover knows that the accessory is not actually able to open and close by itself, but that hasn’t stopped some customers from inquiring about the trick at Apple Stores.

If anything, this interesting storefront display could grab the attention of those passing by and increase the already high level of foot traffic in Apple Stores. That would be a good thing for Apple, which has faced consecutive quarters of declining iPad sales and could surely benefit from any additional exposure that this storefront display could generate for the iPad.

Clever and eye-catching. Apple Stores always have the best window displays.

Apple Stores always have the best everything! Write an article about the push handles on the doors!

I’ve never been to one with doors, they’re always inside a shopping centre/mall lol.

The one in downtown Portland has doors, not sure I recall anything special about the handles…

This isn’t just in the London store. Pretty sure it’s company wide. The store I work at in Pittsburgh has the same display.

Oh brother. Get ready for another class action lawsuit…..my smart cover does not open on its own. This is false advertising and I have no life.

    Magnets under table.

Impossible. The magnets are only located on the iPad mounting point. They don’t exist in the entire case.

That’s not correct: There are also magnets on the other end: It’s what the iPad uses to determine “wake-up”.

In any case, there is no requirement for those covers to be actual retailed items. Apple could very well create some specific for this display.
