Microsoft is rolling out a new version of Skype for iPhone today, version 5.9, which brings enhancements to the user interface making communicating faster and easier. The latest version adds contact suggestions to the dial pad when entering a number making the process of finding the right person to dial quicker. The update also adds shortcuts for starting video or audio calls from Skype’s chat picker window.
In addition to introducing the latest Skype for iPhone user interface improvements, Microsoft announced a limited pre-release program for testing early versions of Skype in exchange for sharing feedback and ideas…
“We’re looking for enthusiastic Skype users who are interested in providing feedback that will shape and enhance Skype for iOS to join our new pre-release program.”
The program is for Skype for iPhone users 18 or older and of course requires a Skype/Microsoft account while the company describes the program availability as limited. Microsoft has a description of the new pre-release program here as well as a description of what to expect if you get accepted as a tester:
- Trying out some new or upgraded features (don’t worry we’ll let you know what’s new) and tell us about your experience after doing so
- Giving us feedback and suggestions on what you would like to see in the app in the future
- Letting us know of any issues that you run into while using this previewed version
The pre-release program does require users not to share details about future versions of the communication app. Potential testers can submit an application to join the pre-release program here and grab the latest public version of Skype for iPhone for free from the App Store.

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t use FaceTime…why does MS release this for iOS? Should’t they simply keep this for Windows Phone?
Because Skype is platform independent and most people use Android? I use FT when talking to iOS users, but skype’s convenient for talking to Android users or windows
