Apple Pay adds another 15 banks and credit unions, over 60 institutions now supported

Last month Apple rolled out support for dozens of banks and credit unions with Apple Pay bringing the count to more than 45 institutions, and today Apple is out with the first wave of the month adding more than a dozen new banks to its list of supported Apple Pay banks bringing the total count to over 60 institutions. Here are the new banks listed as supporting Apple Pay as of today:

Alliant Credit Union
Altra Federal Credit Union
Andrews Federal Credit Union
Associated Bank
BBVA Compass
BECU (Boeing Employees’ Credit Union)
Ent Federal Credit Union
F&A Federal Credit Union
Fifth Third Bank
First Niagara Bank
First Tech Federal Credit Union
Golden 1 Credit Union
INOVA Federal Credit Union

Star One Credit Union
Uwharrie Bank

While the current list of banks with active support for Apple Pay according to Apple lists just over 60 banks in total now, Apple CEO Tim Cook mentioned a week ago during the company’s quarterly conference call with investors and analysts that the company has signed about 750 banks and credit unions to roll out Apple Pay support.

Cook also added then that $2 out of every $3 spent using contactless payments across the three major credit card companies—Visa, MasterCard, and American Express—was made using Apple Pay.

Apple Pay currently supports making contactless payments in supported businesses using the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Apple Pay can also be used in apps to purchase items with the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 in addition to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5s users can use Apple Pay to make purchases in stores when the older models are paired with the upcoming Apple Watch which is on track to be released in April.

Apple Pay has also been limited to customers in the United States since it launched in late October last year. We reported last month, though, that Apple is preparing to launch Apple Pay in Canada as soon as March. Other reports expect Apple Pay to reach users in the UK during the first half of this year.

Those are some nice new additions. Discover fighting to be the lone bank not on board.

  2. 89p13 - 9 years ago

Now, if Comenity Capital / BJ’s would get on board I’d be 100% covered by ApplePay.

    And CurrentyC is where? :)

  3. Yet again, No Keesler Federal Credit Union…I may need to reach out to them to see what the hold up is

  4. Still awaiting the arrival of Los Angeles Federal Credit Union. Still haven’t been able to use Apple Pay. :-/

  5. just wish they would add Suncoast Credit Union Already. Why

  6. Rolf Haug (@rolfhaug) - 9 years ago

What is the hold up with Discover credit cards?

  7. gigglybeast - 9 years ago

And yet, we still can’t use Apple Pay in the Apple App store to purchase apps. Just yesterday the app store made me enter the security code and expiration date of my credit card on file, just to download a FREE APP! What the heck is wrong with Apple?

    • nsxrebel - 9 years ago

Have you received a new/replacement credit card that you use with the store? You might need to update the credit card info on file. I bet that’s your problem, and not Apple.

      • gigglybeast - 9 years ago

The reason I have to enter my security code and expiration is because my USAA doesn’t automatically authorize

      • gigglybeast - 9 years ago

Oops … online payments. But that would not be a problem, if I could use Apple Pay, but no one can use Apple Pay in the App Store. You have to give your actual credit card information to Apple to store on their server, which defeats one of the primary purposes of Apple Pay, not giving your information out to merchants (Apple) where a hacker can get in and steal your credit card number.

    Solid additions.

What is needed is more retailers! I wish Apple had some incentive for them to sign on to prime the pump, (even beyond delivering the more valuable class of shoppers who are the types who use iOS devices!).

Looking forward to next October when EMV card readers and more NFC POS machines will be coming to the US, as mandated, and Apple Pay and Google Pay should REALLY take off with a vengeance!

In the meantime, it will be fascinating to watch and see how CurrentC is “received” when it is FINALLY introduced here.

    • Technically I don’t think EMV card readers are mandated starting in October, just that that’s when it will “shift liability” for fraud from banks to businesses who still accept old magstripe payments from potentially faked cards. So there will be a big incentive, but I wouldn’t put it past some businesses (especially small ones) to be stingy, keep their old card readers, and just start doing more careful ID and signature checks on their magswipe transactions.

      • jaredporter2014 - 9 years ago

True, but by then certainly all the big, chain retailers including gasoline vendors will be installing NFC readers. Banks may somewhat resist issuing chip/pin cards because I hear they’re sonewhat expensive to produce enmasse.

  11. gigglybeast - 9 years ago

Jared, it seems to send a mixed signal when Apple is not onboard as a retailer themselves as the App Store or iTunes does not take Apple Pay.

    • jaredporter2014 - 9 years ago

Hi Giggly, I’m a bit confused. I have used ApplePay with iTunes successfully using only my fingerprint. (Be sure you have your credit card registered in Passbook).

Speaking of fingerprint ID, this is a prime feature when ordering items online because it obviates one having to type in and dispatch ones credit card number, expiration, and security code, and billing address. We don’t want unscrupulous merchants or online eavesdroppers gaining any access to that valuable information.

      • gigglybeast - 9 years ago

As it was explained to me about the AppleCare folks, when you pay with touch ID you were simply authorizing them to charge your credit card on file, you were not using Apple Pay. You can’t pay with Apple Pay. If you look at the iTunes and App Store payment options you will see that there is not an option for Apple Pay. You can see that this is true by removing your credit card information and then trying to make a purchase; you will have to reenter your credit card information and you cannot pay with Apple Pay.

      • gigglybeast - 9 years ago

First sentence was supposed to say “by the Apple Care folks” not “about the Apple Care folks”. Voice to text has a hard time understanding me :)

  12. saintstryfe - 9 years ago

Mid-Hudson Valley FCU has been on the list for a while, but still isn’t added. I sent a message asking about a time frame, and this was my reply:

“We are registered and actively engaged with them on building the program, but we have not yet received a definitive time frame from Apple for the launch. We will make the service available to our members as soon as possible.
Other wallets including Google Wallet and Soft card can be used mobile payments. However, we realize that Apple is not completely “wallet friendly” now that they have their own offering. Also, we will be offering mobile check deposit very soon.”

    So less than helpful.

  13. TD Bank is also working with Apple Pay. At least I have my TD Bank Debit card on my phone.

  14. josephferranti - 9 years ago

It would be nice if AMEX would add their corporate cards to the list. And HomeGoods.

  15. David Nine (@pairof9s) - 9 years ago

BB&T is not on your list above but has been active since early December.

    • gigglybeast - 9 years ago

I’m guessing the banks listed were the January additions, so BBT wasn’t included.

      • nsxrebel - 9 years ago

Negative ghostrider, I’m with USAA, they were added back in November and they’re on the list.

  16. greginprague - 9 years ago

I just called my credit union (Great Lakes) and the representative had never heard of Apple Pay and after putting me on hold told me that her manager didn’t know anything about it and so they probably weren’t anywhere close to supporting the service. Brilliant! I just emailed them the list of banks/credit unions from this article and said that they need to get on board or customers will start switching.

  17. havewegoneinsane - 9 years ago

Kind of annoyed that I had my previous BJ’s credit card in Apple pay, before I could go to the store to use it I got mailed a new one that is not ApplePay compatible from Comenity.

  19. darkenv2 - 9 years ago

    Still no Simple bank 😕

    • FERNANDO! (@brutedawg) - 9 years ago

DANG it… i had hoped BBVA would rope in its subsidiaries when it jumped on board, BUT this could mean Simple will follow suit very soon!

  20. DamoTheBrave - 9 years ago

be good to see it available in Australia – even ONE bank would be a start!

  21. Leif Paul Ashley - 9 years ago

    Viva Le Apple Pay!

And may CurrentC circle the toilet bowl lol
