Jony Ive has often said that great design solutions are always obvious in retrospect, and I think the UK plug for the Apple Watch is a great example of this. As soon as you see how it works, you wonder why all travel plugs aren’t made like this.

That’s a very neat solution.
UK mains plugs are very bulky, which makes them awkward to carry around, so this folding adaptor is particularly welcome. For anybody thinking these plugs could be used on other appliances, the wiring regulations in the UK would forbid it as it doesn’t contain a standard fuse. This adaptor is still legal because the power adaptor is built into the housing and has it’s own fuse, so no replaceable fuse is needed.
The reason why UK plugs are so large is that the plug contains a user replaceable fuse and it can carry up to 13 Amps at 240 V, which is over 3kW. Having the fuse in the plug means that a table lamp will have a more appropriate 3A fuse, while the plug on an electric kettle has a 13A fuse and if the fuse blows, nothing else on the circuit is affected.. The amount of power available allows an electric kettle to boil water rapidly or a toaster to properly caramelise bread, yet the same socket can be used for anything from a phone charger to a washing machine.
Anything without an Earth would be fine
For some reason I enjoyed this video a heck of a lot more than the three official commercials Apple released for the watch.
