Apple releases iOS 8.4 beta 2 to developers with revamped Music app

A couple of weeks following the first beta, Apple today released iOS 8.4 beta 2 to developers for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. iOS 8.4 beta 2 is available via Software Update for those running the first beta, and it should be available for download soon via the Apple Developer Website. Apple has also released the iOS 8.4 Public Beta 1, which corresponds to this second developer seed, and Xcode 6.4 beta 2.

As we first reported, iOS 8.4 brings a revamped Music app to iOS with a new design, a Mini-Player feature, improved search, and a larger focus on album artwork. At WWDC, Apple will announce the new Music app and its integration with a new Beats-based streaming music service. We’ll update this post live as new features in the second beta are discovered.

Feels more Snappier than previous 8.x updates.

I’ve actually noticed things open much faster on my first generation iPad Air

Does anyone know if the update brings back collapsed album view? If you have multiple albums from an artist, you have to scroll through EVERY song of EVERY album to get what you want. I think the change was made in ios 7.

    • t0501st - 9 years ago

Sorry it does not bring back the compressed album view.

      • anthonyharris7 - 9 years ago

ok thanks. I have no idea why they would make that change in the first place. Its probably one of the most annoying things in IOS that doesnt get attention.

Harken gives you a collapsed album view.

iBooks Textbooks are now available on iPhone, at least on iPhone 6 Plus.

  5. All my music disappeared after updating :/

Same here, and I don’t know what to do!!!!

You can go into the Music app settings an select “Show all music” (I think it says? I’m from Denmark so mine says something else) and then you music will show, but only when you have a data connection. If you are not online, all the music goes away even if it is on your phone, copied from a computer.

      • cma92 - 9 years ago

I just figured out what Kasper said as well. It’s not a reported issue in the iOS 8.4 announcement in FeedBack Assistant so we need to go ahead and report the issue.

This happened to me too. Good news is that your music is still there, it’s just not displaying in the Music app.
Simply go to settings -> general -> reset -> rested all settings ( the top option). After a reset, your music will display in the music app again. :D

      • Thanks! That fixed my problem with videos being synced but not showing on the Videos apps! To the bug reporter!

What are they thinking? I can’t see my music unless I choose to show all songs in the music.app settings, if I go into Airplane mode my music goes away, there is no longer an “Shuffle” over the songs in “Song” view so you have to tap on one of the songs and then tap next track unless you find the song you want to hear first (the first song on my music list is not always the one I will start with)… You have to do a lot better Apple! And give me my music back I manual copied over to the phone!

It’s a beta. They will probably add features before launch. Request them in Feedback Assistant

    • caseyebailey - 9 years ago

no one forced you to update or is keeping you on the beta. just go back to the current shipping version and wait until 8.4 ships if you don’t like it right now….

What’s with the rage? You’ve been informed that this release was only intended for beta software development. You shouldn’t have installed it in the first place. Just go back to 8.3.

  7. t0501st - 9 years ago

What I found out is on the beta you can go to the playlist settings and click make available offline. It appears now you have to download your music.

    • Kasper Sverkel Rasmussen - 9 years ago

      And it does not work…

      • Jörg Wißemann - 9 years ago

Does the word “beta” have any meaning for you?

      • Kasper Sverkel Rasmussen - 9 years ago

Sure, but why break the app all together?

      • Is there any utility in beta testing something that doesn’t work at all?

      • thickmcrunfast1 - 9 years ago

Do not use this if you aren’t a developer. Apple specifically says these aren’t for everyday users to play with. They specifically warn of broken features. Don’t complain about broken apps in betas. That’s ridiculous.

  8. There’s now a download progress indicator when you download songs from iCloud in Music app!

Oh please announce iTunes Radio support for Canada at WWDC. It was “confirmed” for early-2014 so long ago.

After I updated Siri no longer works. Anyone else have this problem?

  11. galley99 - 9 years ago

I listen to albums exclusively. I’d like to be able to stable the Shuffle and Repeat buttons. On more than one occasion, I have accidentally tapped the Shuffle button.

I’m really hoping that the final version of 8.4 includes a simpler way to toggle between all my music and just the music that I have downloaded to my device. Currently, you have to go into the phone settings to switch and I’d love for there to be a way to do it more quickly from within the actual music app.

    • Richard (@rruk01) - 9 years ago

All you need to do is to select the 3 dots next to the album and you will get a menu which allows you to download the album for offline use or to see it in the cloud

Where has the share button gone?

  15. JT Ray (@TheRealJTRay) - 9 years ago

This attempt to fix probably the worst thing about iOS these days is pitiful. I updated to the Public Beta only to revert back to 8.3. I honestly have lost faith in any thing music related at Apple. iTunes has gone from the best Apple App to its worst. I will continue to seek out alternatives.

I just updated to 8.4 this morning and all my music disappeared. It’s still showing up in the usage monitor, but I can’t access (play) any of the songs that are on my phone. Is anyone else having this issue? (Using iPhone 6 with iOS 8.4 via public beta program).
