Samsung looks for any possible advantages in new pair of ads bashing the iPhone 6

Samsung today has shared two new ads for its Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge flagships and in typical Samsung fashion, both of the ads take multiple disses at the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The first ad features the Galaxy S6 Edge and focuses on how the curved display of the device is “useful.” Samsung touts that the S6 Edge lights up on the side when someone calls, while the iPhone 6 simply vibrates. Because a strobing light is definitely more useful than a vibration…

The ad also mentions how the side of the Galaxy S6 Edge is useful for viewing notifications and other content, while the side of the iPhone 6 is simply home to the volume buttons and mute switch.

The next ad focuses on the wireless charging capabilities of the Galaxy S6 variants, as well as their wide-angle front-facing cameras. Regarding the wide-angle front-facing camera, Samsung points out that the Galaxy S6 is able to fit everyone into selfies, while the iPhone 6 cuts people.

Both of the ads end with Samsung claiming that “6 is greater than 6” and that “not all smartphones are created equal.” This isn’t the first time Samsung has released ads that take direct shots at Apple. In the past, Samsung has criticized the iPhone’s display and battery life in ads, as well as the iPad.  When the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were announced, Samsung bragged that its devices had large screens long before the iPhone.

Bash the competitor is always an interesting ad strategy but I’m often left thinking the one being bashed is the one on top.

    • jimr450 - 9 years ago

Yup, exactly. It always stinks of desperation (their sales are way down and iPhones are way up). I really thought Samsung had grown up this year and moved past the bashing advertising – thought they learned it doesn’t seem to work for them.

  3. rafalb177 - 9 years ago

    As “classy” as their products.

  4. mytawalbeh - 9 years ago

They even count on iPhone to make these shit ads !!! That is Childish and absurd!
Actually, it is making me cling more and more to my iPhone.
Samsung must take one thing for fact; you’re not in iPhone level ! Why do they always comparing their devices to those, where basically the software and the hardware (unless it is copied) different. !

    • twill94 - 9 years ago

It’s for entertainment. Not even meant for swinging customers to their side. You cant tell me the past 2-3 years samsung commercials haven’t been funny.

      • mytawalbeh - 9 years ago

They’re just trying to be funny, but in fact they are looking to be famous by implying iPhone in their ads! Then y don’t they bashing other companies’ flagships ?!
However, none of others except Samsung does this ridiculous things and gimmick features (as majority see it, go check the dislikes there).

      • vboom90 - 9 years ago

I’ll admit when they changed from the 30 pin adapter Samsung had an ad that had hipsters talking about it being “all digital” then asked what that means they responded “I don’t even know” which legitimately got a chuckle from me but other than that it’s all nonsense, this years Galaxy has been a step back much more than it has been a leap forward.

  5. Toro Volt (@torovolt) - 9 years ago

Apple needs to drop the 4:3 Image sensor for good and start using either 3:2 or 16:9 sensors to get wider angles of view for the same lens. Samsung is using sensor that are a better match for Smartphones, TV and Computer’s wider Screens.

    • Jens Sage - 9 years ago

as a camera it makes more sense since the near-square format makes more use of the lightcircle from the lense

      • Toro Volt (@torovolt) - 9 years ago

Nope, in fact most DSRL have 3:2 Ratio sensor and High End Cinema Cameras 16:9.
Is all about filling the Image Circle with your intended final image aspect ratio.
It is really odd and inefficient that all iPhones display pictures full screen with black pillars on the side or cropped top and bottom given the iPhone 16:9 Screen.
The rumored new Sony sensor RGBW for the iPhone 6s is expected to be 3:2 , finally!
Samsung is using a Sony 16:9 sensor in their S6 and Note 4. So there is no cropping or black bars when showing pictures at full screen.

      • rnc - 9 years ago

Most DSLR’s have 3:2, because they descend from 35mm film cameras.

35mm film cameras are 3:2, because they used standard 35mm movie film.

4:3 is a standard in photography, the most expensive (medium format DSLR) cameras are 4:3.

You can print photos in 4:3 and 3:2 in any photo printing service, while 16:9 is uncommon…

Also, 4:3 is closer to the ideal (square), because lets you frame the picture you want, and then think of a cropping…

      • WaveMedia (@WaveMedia) - 9 years ago

DSLR’s also have a MUCH larger sensor and MUCH, MUCH, MUCH larger lenses to direct all that light. Apple are making better use of that sensor by not cropping half of the photocells out.

Its fun to watch competitors try so hard.

  7. airmanchairman - 9 years ago

LoL, just have to (grudgingly) chuckle at the childishly taunting tone of the “6 is greater than 6” voiceover…

  8. Dave Huntley - 9 years ago

Maybe the commercial should also point out Samsung hired goons to threaten families protesting Samsung because their loved ones were poisoned at one of their chip plants. Perhaps a drop of blood on screen to signify that thugs still get hired by big companies in Korea to keep the workers quiet. Samsung finally apologized after threatening many families for years.

Perhaps 6 is better than 6, I have not yeard yet that Apple has goons on the payroll.

  9. Kevin Stuckey - 9 years ago

For a real comparison, let’s compare the edge display of the iPhone 6 to the edge display of the Galaxy S6…oh wait, they are the same. To be technical, the S6 also has no sense of symmetry or any geometry skills whatsoever to it. Let’s just throw a headphone jack here, microphone there and add the Verizon symbol for good measure.

  10. iRoswell - 9 years ago

These commercials making me think of political campaigns. You know the ones I’m talking about… Where the one guy is behind in the polls and he has to run a smear campaign to compete- but still loses in the end. Yeah, I knew you knew what I was talking about.

    • iRoswell - 9 years ago

The only thing I dislike more than a crappy Samesung commercial, is not being able to edit and fix my own comment.

Just like their products, utter and complete landfill garbage…

  12. incredibilistic - 9 years ago

The wireless charging is actually a stand out feature but the glowing edge is rather stupid. Call me crazy but I don’t lay my phone down on its face very often. Actually never.

  13. Bhusal Nirmal - 9 years ago

    Ah well,
Well i own both samsung galaxy S6 edge and iphone 6. Yes samsung has bigger battery and curved screen octa core CPU i assume, 3 GB RAM but when i compared in terms of battery iphone 6 has less drain than s6 edge in in standby mode. Samsung has no match for iphone 6 CPU although iphone as DUAL COre CPU. GUI in iphone 6 is more smooth than S6 edge. found Sluggish GUI in S6 edge. S6 edge Design is nice ah and iphone 6 is a bit thinner than s6 edge.
Well Samsung comparing its phone with apple phones i feel a bit funny because they don’t have anything to do rather than improving their products these korean guys just comparing their devices. Well iphone is an iphone KING of Phones. Whereas samsung they are just KINDS. No matter how much dirty or fair comparison these korean guys make, Iphone is an Iphone. Well sometimes problem comes but not all the times……

  15. mobileseeks - 9 years ago

I will buy a Samsung phone when they have iOS installed. ;)

  16. It’s lamentable for Samsung searching any little evidence too seemingly prove that their smartphone is better than the iPhone.
This time no better display or higher speed or more memory because there isn’t.
The S6 has copied everything from design from iPhone 6 even the number!

But are these 2 evidences of any advantage for me?
    NO.
First I never take selfies, the most boring experience ever! I only use FaceTime if I make phone calls with my kids, and most time they are calling. I use the voice version.

Making better front cams, will mean stealing more passwords! Like the virus on Android devices: via the front cam it reads the reflections in your eyes when you type in your passcode. Even works with gesture codes.
Now having a wider angle means even windows behind you can be read the the front cam to steal your codes ;-)

Second the edge is of no use for me. All my iPhones were / are expensive gadgets which I don’t want to be scratched or destroyed so I put them I’m leather cases hiding the display.
I would do the same with Samsung smartphones, so the edge part would be hidden most time.
I never put my iPhone in front of me to see the edge. If i’m expecting a message I would check the display. And if I’m in a business conference there is nothing more important than this conference. So I’m not allowed to check my messages nor being distracted by a blinking gimmick. And in all other circumstances the messages aren’t so important to have a glimpse at them from the edge, either I check them or I leave them. If my partner on the other side of the table will be attracted by tens of messages blinking as a side effect of his Samsung I would ask him/her either shut down the phone or leave the messages in your pocket.

BTW the Apple Watch can notify you more elegantly than this edge invention.

    • Dillon Baio - 9 years ago

Technically, in their defense (and this is one of the only times I will ever defend Samsung), they didn’t copy the number “6”, they just got to that point in the “Galaxy S” line. But in no way am I endorsing Samsung lol.

    • twill94 - 9 years ago

So why not get the Galaxy Watch? My dad is an IT (Life Point Hospitals) and during conference meetings more people prefer Galaxy over Iphone just because of the pairing and instant file share capabilities. When it comes to the S6 Edge you are able to edit which messages pop up either it be emails, texts, newsletters etc etc. My dad only has corporate emails and family texts added to his edge as well. Even during his meetings(which I’ve attended one the S6 edge comes in handy when on silent and you’re able to just look down and glimpse at an important text or email. Even though its all personal preference Samsung didn’t copy anything. I find tgethe commercials funny and as much as I want an Iphone 6 plus (love the size, FT and simplicity) I can use S6 for much much more for my household anf school. Samsung tv, samsng laptop and even my dad’s samsung appliances are even connected. Apple is still on laptops, expensive computers and *trash* apple tv. When apple makes touch screen fridges and washer and dryers maybe they’ll lead the industry in everything. But other than that both phones and powerful in their own way. And also the edge is protected fairly well and it’s easy to preveny scratches on it as my dad only gets top of the line products.

TO top it all off Samsung still makes apples interior products. remember the so called sapphire glass apple was going to use, nah they went straight to samsung for the gorilla glass.

  17. Sacha - 9 years ago

It’s just a phone! What has gotten into these companies?

  18. Steven Moore (@Stniuk) - 9 years ago

  19. patthecarnut - 9 years ago

    One word…Panorama

    Can Samsung even DO panoramas?

It’s funny, no matter the product, I look down on the one doing the bashing. Their product is so bad, they have to tear down the competition to falsely make it look good.

    • Tyler Penrod - 9 years ago

The only bashing ad series I’ve ever liked was the “I’m A Mac” series. It was very humorous. haha

      • WaveMedia (@WaveMedia) - 9 years ago

The “Get a Mac” ads were mostly making fun of Vista too. Everyone made fun of Vista. Even the Windows die hards. It’s like a swear word around IT folk. They were also real issues too and showing how the Mac has solutions to those problems.

    • twill94 - 9 years ago

      Samsung been had panorama.

  20. MarkByron Falta - 9 years ago

Maybe they should advertise their removable battery and expandable storage option. Oh wait, nvm.

    • Tyler Penrod - 9 years ago

Right? Their biggest selling points (also the water resistant feature), and they got rid of ALL of them! Silly people.

  21. Henry Johansen - 9 years ago

Making commercials like this just looks desperate. Be proud of your own product instead of bashing others… As for the arguments:
The first one, showing of the edge of the screen actually sounded cool – until they started a comparison to something that isn’t comparable. I wouldn’t go out and buy something with a screen like that, since I would imagine it being hard to get a good cover for it, but it was a legitimate piece of advertisement – until they brought in the iPhone to prove….. well, nothing…
In the next one, as far as the charger goes, I think it’s a matter of preference. I actually DO get annoyed once in a while when I want to unplug my iPhone with one hand, cause that’s right next to impossible, but on the other hand, I like being able to use it while I charge it, so…..
And as for the camera… Well… That is the only thing I actually think the Samsung does better. Don’t get me wrong, I would NOT buy any Samsung or Android phone as long as they’re as buggy and gimmicky as they are, but Apples camera is just not as good as it should have been.
It takes great pictures, but once you switch from images to video in an area that is just a little bit darker than sunlight; watch how the light disappears. And the other systems seems to have figured this one out. And as for the image aspect ratio, well, the pictures should fit the screen. That is NOT to say that 16:9 is better than 3:2 – just to say that the iPhone has a 16:9 display, and should have a camera that takes 16:9 pictures, since most of the pictures are being viewed directly on the phone anyways.

    • patthecarnut - 9 years ago

I think the rolled edge screen is a gimmick. I seriously do not get it. You can see notifications with the phone face down, who cares! Leave the phone face up and you don’t need the gimmick. Besides, if you know you are gonna get notifications, why would you put it face down. It’s just a silly feature.

      • twill94 - 9 years ago

It keeps people from viewimg your messages or emails as well as keeping your phone from lighting up to conserve battery. Duh.

      • rwtd - 9 years ago

twill94, that’s what Notification options are for. Plus one can easily disable message preview.

  22. Joe Smith - 9 years ago

I switched from my iPhone to the Galaxy S5 last year, I can honestly say that was a huge mistake. At first it was very pleasant, the switcher app worked great and the phone takes awesome photos. But then came the software upgrades that have rendered this device to be just a mess of a phone. It now over heats and randomly I have to reboot it because either bluetooth makes it freeze up or the numbers become random blocks. I even did a fresh install of the OS which failed to resolve any of these issues. I can’t wait to get rid of this POS and get back to the iPhone! Sorry Samsung I gave it a real effort.

Seems to me Sammy doesn’t understand their target market. This campaign will not float their sinking ship.

Ads like this clearly target iOS users in an attempt to get them to switch to a “better” device. iOS users are far too loyal to fall for a gimmick here and a gimmick there…so few make the Android switch that it is simply not smart to target iOS “switchers”.

Sammy’s target market is Apple haters (a relatively small but loyal segment), people who are new to smartphones (now, a nearly non-existent segment) and people looking for a cheaper alternative to Apple. Oh, and a few Google Gear Heads who are as blindly loyal to Google products as Apple fan-boys are to iOS.

Clearly, Sammy has the flagship Droid phones. Problem is, there are a lot of competitors in the mid to lower end of the market, but their products are less expensive than Sammy’s. So Sammy tries to sell a inferior product to the premium market rather than targeting a superior product to the mid to low end of the market.

Each year, Sammy delivers the next iPhone killer, and within a month or two the price of the product is discounted in hopes of getting people to buy it. They consistently miss the mark. Their margins are not sufficient to maintain the product line long term.

Seems to me, Sammy might get some traction with the market by properly targeting their products as less expensive, but nearly as capable as the iPhone. In other words, boldly embrace their iPhone clone role. Because, in the end, that is what their products are. Being truthful in marketing, including pricing might just develop into a sustainable product. Until then, it seems like they are either clueless, or in denial.

    • patthecarnut - 9 years ago

Regarding Apple haters. I work in an office of Android users and Windows fan boys. It is unreal how they hate something they don’t understand simply because it’s Apple. Everyday is good hearted banter about Mac vs PC and the stuff they bring up as ammo just proves them utterly uninformed. The difference is I have built and worked Windows machines and have used both for 20 years. They on the other hand have not. I might date myself a bit but I’m reminded of a lyric from a Genesis song from Duke, Duke’s Travels “you kill what you fear and you fear what you don’t understand”. :o)

    • WaveMedia (@WaveMedia) - 9 years ago

You started to go somewhere with the people they target but didn’t quite get there, but I agree with all you say.

They’re targeting their ads at Apple haters. The sort of people who’d never actually buy Apple stuff anyway, so it’s basically a circle jerk.

  24. Howie Isaacks - 9 years ago

USELESS features! I don’t give a damn about having the edge of my phone light up, and I don’t give a damn about wireless charging. I have a case on my iPhone. If Apple introduces wireless charging, they will likely implement it in a way that allows a user to continue using their case. That’s REAL innovation. Otherwise, the feature is worthless. Also, how damn lazy can someone be? It’s not that big of a deal to plug a phone in to charge. I carry an extra cable for my iPhone in my laptop bag in case I need to charge it. If Samsung comes up with any meaningful and real innovations, I might be impressed, but these ads are just dumb. Notice that Apple never compares their product to someone else’s in their ads. Why? Because they don’t need to.

    • twill94 - 9 years ago

Really now lazy? You might as well say people who send emails are to lazy to send it through USPS. Everything in the world is quick. I to carry an extra charging cable but to be able to pull out my wireless charger, sit it on the desk and watch it start charging is faster than using/finding an outlet. I would prefer wireless charging over plane, bus or at an airport (most outlets are used there 😐…) oh and samsung doesn’t have to bash apple, it’s just what they are known for and its entertaining. Thats like a shit talker who swears up and down before the fight for entertainment than the person who’s quiet (Mayweather&Pacquiao) and maybe just maybe for once, dont know if you’ve owned or test used the S6 edge, once you edit the feature to YOUR liking it is an awesome phone with the features and capabilites. I enjoy samsung as well as iphone but the features samsung offers outweighs apple’s.

I am still getting a 6plus before the S6 edge. Lovely how having two phones makes life easier.(Verizon and tmobile)

      • Howie Isaacks - 9 years ago

Step off. I don’t care what you think.

  25. This is the same company that bashed Apple by advertising a removable battery a few months back and then got rid of that same option with the new phones.

    • twill94 - 9 years ago

With the new contract with a company the design wouldn’t allow it to happen 😣

  26. jorheu - 9 years ago

They are called selfies for a reason they aren’t supposed to accommodate 6 people

    • twill94 - 9 years ago

But in reality how many people do you see taking pictures of everyone and themselves. In college its alot of people who like that feature haha.

  27. Pagan Destiny - 9 years ago

iOS sucks and Apple is just the worst shit on Earth. Samsung ??? Yeah of course I love it ! Switching from CrApple to Android was the best choice I made ! Can’t wait to get my new Samsung in my pocket (at least this one will not bend, not like the iCrap ! Well done, Samsung, really, this ad is a good job !

  28. Donald William Gillies - 9 years ago

samsung is really self destructing. they left qualcomm to swing in the wind and now they are flailing at anything that moves in a desperate bid to keep their cash cow – the cellphone – the source of subsidies to all their other products including TVs – alive.
