Instagram rolling out user, location, and hashtag search on the web

Nice Yosemite reference, Instagram

Instagram first started as an iPhone-only photo sharing social network and has since expanded to other smartphone platforms, but the experience for interacting with Instagram on the Mac never been at feature parity. Today Instagram is making small steps to improve the experience with using the service on the web by introducing the ability to search for content using the official Instagram website.Instagram says that users will be able to search for people, locations, and hashtags from its website. Instagram’s support for basic search features on the web follows last month’s major feature update to the iPhone app centered around search.

Building on top of the basic search functionality, Instagram overhauled its mobile Explore tab to present trending content and add improved search capabilities. Instagram on the web doesn’t yet support viewing trending content, but the ability to view tagged photos or images from certain people or places is included.

Instagram says the new web search feature is available starting today, although it appears to still be rolling out for now on Instagram.com. You can also find Instagram for iPhone and Apple Watch on the App Store.

Search by location? Does that mean every picture taken with the app embedded the GPS coordinates into the photo?

When sharing a photo shot by the stock camera app all meta data is taken out for privacy reasons.

This is for pictures that people tagged a location on when posting them. If you dont tag a location it is not included in the search or the map on your profile page.

  3. Hashtag searching is not accurate since I utilize it on iPhone.
