Yahoo! reportedly planning to unveil new messaging app at press event this week

Yahoo is planning a mid-week press event to reveal a new messaging app, according to a report from Re/code. The event was originally speculated to be related to a new version of the Tumblr or Flickr apps, but Re/code’s Kara Swisher noted that it will instead be related to a new messaging endeavour.

The idea that Yahoo! is launching a new messaging app is interesting, given that the company debuted its Livetext chat app only a few weeks ago. It’s possible that this event will simply be dedicated to an Android version of that software, or it could point to a revamp of the now-defunct Yahoo! Messenger app.

It’s no surprise that Yahoo! would want to get (back) in on the messaging app market, with competitors like Facebook and Google continually revamping their own offerings.
