T-Mobile reports iPhone preorders up over 30% from last year as Apple warns of delays in NY

T-Mobile CEO John Legere has tweeted that iPhone 6s preorders are more than 30% higher than those of the iPhone 6 last year. While there have been a number of clues that the iPhone 6s launch was going to be big, this is the first sign of any hard data.

Apple said a week ago that it was ‘on pace’ to beat last year’s opening weekend record of 10M sales, Phil Schiller later adding that customer response had been “incredibly positive.” We’ve also seen that the first batch of both 6s and 6s Plus are sold out worldwide for delivery by Friday …

One group of customers who may not get their iPhones on Friday, however, are those in New York and Philadelphia. Due to security arrangements for a visit by the Pope, UPS had earlier warned that deliveries scheduled for Friday to New York City and Philadelphia addresses could be delayed until the following day, and Apple has now echoed this warning.

In an email to those whose deliveries were scheduled for Friday, Apple has said that some may receive their iPhones on Saturday.

Dear <Name>,

Thank you for your recent Apple Store purchase.

Your iPhone 6s <Spec> is scheduled for delivery on Friday, September 25th. However, due to traffic restrictions expected for that day in New York City, your delivery may be delayed.

If we’re unable to complete the delivery on Friday, we’ll also be making Saturday deliveries at most locations.

To track your package, please visit UPS with your tracking number: <Number>.

We know you’re looking forward to receiving your new iPhone, and we apologize if your order is affected.

Sincerely,

Apple

Of course, with its aggressive promotions, T-Mobile could be poaching sales from other carriers.

Gotta love competition. If one company makes a good deal, the others need to respond otherwise they’re left in the dust. The good news is that next time Verizon and ATT will be more competitive in response to Tmobile’s success. If not, then they’ll just continue to see their sales drop in favor of competition.

So are total pre-orders up 30% or just T-Mobile? From what I have heard the “unlocked” iPhone 6S is technically T-Mo branded so that may account for their higher numbers. Something tells me they aren’t giving us all the details on that number, per the usual with the carriers.

just Tmobile since it is there CEO who is posting this number.

I wonder how many are actually using that service or just wanted an unlocked iPhone? Ah the power of numbers I’ll tell ya.

I speculate that T-Mobile is poaching from other carriers… because I have been poached!

A few weeks ago my spouse and I tried out T-Mobile with their “Test Drive” program. We were taking a long weekend, so it was the perfect time to travel in the region and try their service in all the different places we go – home, work, around town and around the tri-state area.

We are sold. T-Mobile service is just as good, if not better for us in terms of call quality and speed. And the price? It’s much cheaper than Verizon and AT&T, and on-par with Sprint.

And so now we’re moving to T-Mobile. I’m staying behind on AT&T, since my employer pays for my device, but all our personally-paid-for service plans are in the process of moving to TMob.

And so I imagine that TMob will get many switchers this year. Will it help their profits? I’m not sure. But it sure will increase their subscriber base.
