App Store ‘temporarily unavailable’ error preventing downloads and updates for some [U: Resolved]

App Store

[Update 5:30 PM ET: Apple has acknowledged a 4+ hour issue on its system status dashboard with “slower than usual performance when using iCloud Drive, Photos, and Backup” but not App Store issues although the outage appears to be resolved.]

The App Store on both iOS and the Mac appears to currently be experiencing issues with downloading new and previously purchased apps as well as app updates for some but not all users. Apple’s system status board for Apple Services, Stores, and iCloud doesn’t mention the service interruption in the detailed timeline section at the time of writing, but several readers have pointed out the issue with the App Store on iPhone and iPad and within iTunes on the desktop.

iTunes issue

The service interruption comes as Apple prepares to launch a new App Store on tvOS with the new Apple TV launching on Friday, which could explain the issues many are experiencing on the backend. Some users have reported seeing the issues only intermittently but the problems appear to be widespread and consistent for many. We’ll monitor the issue and update if Apple addresses the issue or it appears resolved.

  1. Glad it wasn’t just me, was waiting for a site to mention it.

I’d love to know how often does this sort of thing happen on Google Play, because it seems that over the past weeks, it’s been a totally unreliable experience, here in France and the UK at least. Of course, no service is perfect, but is this what we should think as ‘normal’ or is Apple particularly weak with this sort of thing?

it has literally never happened to me in the 5 years i have had android. this week i finally decided to switch to iOS.. and this is the service we get? i thought iOS was supposed to “just work”

    Same issue here.

  5. Ivo Ivanov - 7 years ago

this has NEVER happened before ! Google it !

  6. charlz - 7 years ago hasn’t been a reliable source of their availability, but Apple should fix that at least.

THIS! I can’t believe how worthless even their status site is. You would think they can script an attempt to download any app every few minutes and update the site automatically on that. Not having access to apps is infuriating. Troubleshooting what you think is a local issue only to find out it’s remote is even more so!

I wonder if the accounts that are affected are ones that are connected on AppleTV’s currently. I have an AppleTV and my account is affected. I cannot update or download new apps.

I haven’t used a new Apple TV but having issues so think it’s more wide spread.

It’s affecting my account, and I don’t own an Apple TV.

i have never had an apple tv but this is still happening to me … very frustrating, especially because i switched over from android this week because everyone was telling me that Apple “just works”..

The best part about this is that Apple hasn’t noted it on their system status page. I wonder why I ever bother looking there?

I’ve seen this issue off and on for a couple of weeks. I assumed it was because the servers were so busy, because it’s not consistent. However, today, I saw this issue within iBooks on my desktop, with updates that would not process.

  13. shultquist - 7 years ago

I’ve had this issue off and on for over a week. I assumed it has to do with the new app thinning, and previously there would be 404 errors for a long URL which included “pre thinned” in the text of the URL. Now, I just get this error.

Hope this get addressed soon. Also hope Apple will focus on the online service experience, since it’s been particularly unreliable, again.

So I finally broke down and decided to upgrade to El Capitan from Maverick. Everything worked fine until I tried to use the App Store and I received this message. I was thinking that is it was me or what? So decided to restore back to Maverick. I’ll try it again at a later date. Hope I am made aware that this was fixed because I really would like to be at El Capitan.
