Sony announces new wireless adapter bringing full DualShock 4 controller support to Mac

Sony today announced a new accessory for Mac and PC users that will bring improved gaming support to the platform. In a blog post, Sony unveiled the DualShock 4 USB Wireless Adapter. This accessory will let users connect a DualShock 4 to any Mac, with all aspects of the controller being fully functional.

For instance, Sony says that the buttons, analog sticks, touch pad, light pad, motion sensors, vibration, and stereo headset jack will all be functional for Mac users, assuming the game itself supports the features.

We’re also introducing a new device, the DualShock 4 USB Wireless Adaptor, which launches in early September for a suggested retail price of $24.99. This adaptor will let you connect a DualShock 4 to PC and Mac wirelessly, and will enable every feature of the controller you know and love: buttons, analog sticks, touch pad, light bar, motion sensors, vibration, and stereo headset jack – as long as the gaming application supports these features.

While connecting a DualShock 4 controller to a Mac has long been possible via USB, the new adapter allows wireless connection and full functionality. A variety of third-party controller options have been available for a while now, as well.

Sony today also introduced a new PlayStation Now app for Windows users. This app brings a handful of PlayStation-exclusive titles to the PC. At this point, Sony says it is in the process of evaluating Mac support for the PS Now app, but has “nothing to announce at this time.”

In addition to working with the new Windows-exclusive PS Now app, the DualShock 4 USB Wireless adapter will also work with the existing Remote Play app that is available for Mac. For those unfamiliar, Remote Play allows users to stream PS4 games to their Mac.

The DualShock 4 Wireless Adapter will be available sometime next month for $24.99. More information is available on Sony’s official PlayStation blog.
