Subject to availability, the world is getting their hands on their brand new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus units today. This includes the fleet of YouTube accounts who buy phones just to destroy them … there are now dozens of iPhone 7 waterproofing tests ready to watch.
Apple only promises the iPhone 7 can withstand 1 meter of submersion – all the test iPhones in the YouTube videos we’ve seen easily exceed its advertised waterproofness rating. The video from infohut, embedded below, subjects the iPhone 7 in water, fizzy orange and coffee. The iPhone 7 survives in perfect working order; the video then takes the phone apart to show that no liquid residue at all breached the chassis.

We’ve included a bunch of different iPhone 7 waterproofing tests below, as YouTube is flooded with new iPhone 7 stress tests. Although the phone is not functional whilst it is under water, as the capacitive touchscreen cannot pick up touch input, the devices are perfectly fine after they have been dried off.
In the following video by infohut, the phone ‘easily’ survives water, fizzy drink and hot coffee. The tester then takes apart the phone at the end of the video to prove that no water residue managed to percolate inside.
Apple doesn’t recommend using the iPhone for underwater photography but it appears to be very much possible with iPhone 7. As the screen doesn’t work whilst underwater, you have to start the video capture above the surface or take photos using the hardware volume button.
The iPhone 7 also seems resistant to seawater, as highlighted by this clip.
Obviously, these test environments are overkill but they are valuable. If the iPhone 7 can withstand a dunking, it surely will be fine in the day-to-day exposure to water like dropping it in the toilet or a sink.
Apple’s documentation for iPhone 7 takes a conservative approach as to the nature of its waterproofness. Apple recommends cleaning the phone immediately if it comes into contact with liquid. Apple says to avoid swimming or bathing with the iPhone 7, exposing the device to high velocity water like surfing or jet skiing or using the phone in a sauna.
The company warns that water resistance is not a permanent feature of the iPhone 7 and may degrade over time. It is also quick to note that liquid damage is not covered by the standard warranty.
