iOS 10: How to turn automatic app updates on and off

Automatic Downloads is a feature in iOS 10 that is on by default and helps your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to automatically stay on top of installing the latest available apps and more.

While many users may prefer to leave this feature on, there are a variety of reasons why you may want to turn it off, even if temporarily, or to adjust if apps can auto-update over a cellular connection. Also, if you think it may have been turned this feature on or off unintentionally and want to double-check, keep reading.

In the same settings you’ll be able to decide if you’d like your iOS device to automatically download purchases such as music, apps, and books made on other iOS devices that use the same Apple ID.

How to turn automatic app updates on and off

  1. Tap on Settings
  2. Swipe down and tap on iTunes & App Store
  3. Tap the toggle next to Updates to turn it on/off

If you’re trying to limit your cellular data usage, you may want to toggle off the Use Cellular Data. This will just mean that automatic app updates will only happen when connected to Wi-Fi.

One other thing to note, as seen in the far right screenshot above, if you have Low Power Mode turned on, all automatic updates and downloads will be suspended until the feature is turned off or your battery is sufficiently charged.
