Apple taps SNL veteran Kristen Wiig for new comedy series for TV package

Details about Apple’s upcoming video service continue to surface with The Hollywood Reporter reporting that Kristen Wiig will star in a comedy series distributed by Apple. Reese Witherspoon, who already has two upcoming shows through Apple, will produce the comedy show.

In a competitive situation with multiple outlets bidding, Apple has landed a 10-episode comedy series executive produced by and starring the Saturday Night Live grad. The project, inspired by Curtis Sittenfeld’s upcoming short-story collection You Think It, I’ll Say It and produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine banner, is the tech giant’s first scripted comedy pickup.

Kristen Wiig has been involved with SNL off and on since 2005 and starred in the Ghostbusters reboot in 2016.

Apple’s streaming video service should offer a handful of shows when it launches sometime in the future. The company is currently in a bidding war with HBO over a J.J. Abrams sci-fi drama and has picked up dramas starring Octavia Spencer, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Anniston, two sci-fi series from Steven Knight and Steven Spielberg, and a docuseries about luxury homes.

Apple started seriously developing its original content package last summer when it hired two top Sony Television executives, although the company hasn’t officially announced the service yet.
