BBEdit 12.1 adds Touch Bar support on MacBook Pros, now 64-bit

Bare Bones Software has just released an important new update to its BBEdit HTML and text editor. Version 12.1 makes BBEdit a 64-bit application for the first time, which has performance advantages now and future-proofs BBEdit for upcoming macOS updates.

Apple has been signaling clearly that a future version of macOS (possibly macOS 10.14) will make 32-bit apps run in a limited compatibility mode. Apple fully dropped support for 32-bit apps with iOS 11 requiring 64-bit to even launch or remain on the App Store.

From BareBones Software on benefits today:

BBEdit 12.1 is the first version of BBEdit to run as a 64-bit application, the benefits of which include quicker launch times, plus access to a wider variety of third-party color pickers and contextual menu plug-ins. BBEdit 12.1 also includes enhancements and refinements to existing features, and fixes for specific reported issues, and is a recommended and free update to all registered customers with BBEdit 12.

BBEdit 12.1 also adds Touch Bar support on MacBook Pros introduced in 2016 and later.

New Touch Bar support provides easy access to commonly used functions in the FTP/SFTP browser, Text Factory, “Preview in BBEdit” and editing windows. Version 12.1 also adds significant enhancements to “Go To Line” and “Preview in BBEdit” features.

The update should also improve handling of opening and saving large files and more. Detailed release notes can be found here. Version 12.1 is a free update to BBEdit 12 which retails standard for $49.99. Upgrade pricing is also available.
