‘Planet of the Apps’ star Gary Vaynerchuk attributes show’s failure to Apple’s bad marketing

Apple officially entered the original content market last year with its ‘Planet of the Apps’ reality TV series, but viewer and critic reactions to the series were less than positive. Now, vocal entrepreneur and star of the series, Gary Vaynerchuk is slamming Apple for the way it marketed the show…

‘Planet of the Apps’ was a Shark Tank-style show in which developers came to pitch their app ideas to a panel of mentors, including Vaynerchuk, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, and Will.i.am. The end goal was to receive financing through a Silicon Valley investment firm.

As spotted by Business Insider, Vaynerchuk talked about his experience on ‘Planet of the Apps’ while hosting one of his ‘Ask Gary Vee’ videos on YouTube.

The issue with the show, Vaynerchuk said, came in how Apple marketed the series – apparently doing “everything wrong.”

“I was on an Apple show, ‘Planet of the Apps,’ Gwyneth [Paltrow], Will[.i.am], Jessica Alba, and me. And Apple didn’t use me or Vayner to do the marketing, and did everything wrong. Apple!” he exclaimed, talking about his eponymous marketing company.

Vaynerchuk went on to explain that during marketing meetings about the show, he stayed quiet and let Apple handle that side of things as it was their show and their responsibility.

“For all my bravado, I’m a real tough guy when it’s in my home, this is my home, and every time I do content, it’s my home. But when I’m at someone else’s house, I was taught to show respect. You’d be blown away by the way I handled myself in the Apple marketing meetings,” Vaynerchuk said.

“My cheeks were bleeding profusely out of every meeting, because I was biting them, my tongue completely fell out of my mouth,” he continued.

Interestingly, Vaynerchuk also took issue with Apple Music’s Jimmy Iovine not being more involved in the show. Seemingly, Vaynerchuk thinks that had Iovine been more involved, the marketing for ‘Planet of the Apps’ would have been better:

“You’re also there with Jimmy Iovine, Jimmy’s like, ‘I got it, we got it, we got it.’ And I knew he wasn’t in the trenches. I know Jimmy’s no dope, clearly. But I was like, ‘fu– this.'”

Apple debuted the first episode of ‘Planet of the Apps’ roughly 13 months ago, but has stayed quiet when it comes to viewership. While the company’s ‘Carpool Karaoke’ spin-off was renewed for a season two, ‘Planet of the Apps’ has not received the same treatment.

Do you agree with Gary Vaynerchuk that marketing was the issue for the show? Or did issues run much deeper? Let us know down in the comments!
