Department of Homeland Security says ‘no reason to doubt’ Apple’s denial of spy chip story

In response to a Bloomberg Businessweek story alleging Apple discovered Chinese spy chips in its servers, The Department of Homeland Security has issued a statement in which it sides with Apple. The DHS says it currently has “no reason to doubt” Apple’s denial.

In its statement, The Department of Homeland Security explains that it currently has no reason not to believe Apple’s denial of the story – as well as Amazon’s denial. The statement goes on to say that the DHS is committed to “information and communications technology supply chain security.”

“The Department of Homeland Security is aware of the media reports of a technology supply chain compromise. Like our partners in the UK, the National Cyber Security Centre, at this time we have no reason to doubt the statements from the companies named in the story. Information and communications technology supply chain security is core to DHS’s cybersecurity mission and we are committed to the security and integrity of the technology on which Americans and others around the world increasingly rely.

The Businessweek story was originally published on Thursday, and Apple immediately followed it up with a strong statement in which it denied the allegations. Apple’s denial of the story has been uncharacteristic for the company. Just yesterday a handful of ‘senior’ Apple executives spoke to BuzzFeed about the story, again denying the allegations and offering more details about the company’s investigation into the claims.
