Yesterday in New York City, Synology took the wraps off its latest consumer product, the MR2200ac mesh router. Like other popular mesh router systems, Synology’s MR2200ac allows users to fill their home with Wi-Fi in an effort to eliminate the so-called dead zones in coverage.

One of the advantages of the MR2200ac is that it works with Synology’s excellent SRM software, which is similar to the software the company uses to manage its Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices. SRM is easy to use, walking users through the initial set up process, and post-set up configuration. Yet, like DSM, it comes with many in-depth features that power users demand.
For users located in small homes and apartments, a single MR2200ac mesh router may be sufficient, providing coverage for 2,000 square feet. For larger, and/or more complex residences, you’ll want to add one or more additional MR2200ac routers to your network.
That said, power users will want to opt for Synology’s RT2600ac (review), which comes with more connectivity and configuration options. If you already own an RT2600ac, an update to version 1.2 of SRM will allow you to add the MR2200ac to expand your existing home or small-business network.
With Apple’s move out of the router business, I recommended the RT2600ac as an upgrade; you’ll find that it’s easy to use with SRM, and far more feature-rich than the AirPort Extreme.
Synology also announced enhancements to the RT2600ac software, bringing with it enhanced threat protection and an upgraded Safe Access application for protecting users on the network.
9to5Mac’s Take
Considering the popularity of mesh networks, the MR2200ac is a necessary product for Synology to release. Consumers only willing to consider a mesh network now have Synology hardware as a legitimate option. And for current RT2600ac owners who wish to use mesh networking, it gives them the option of sticking with Synology hardware instead of switching over to a product like Eero, Orbi, Google Home, AmpliFi, etc.
