9to5Mac is on the ground in San Jose, California for Apple’s 2019 Worldwide Developers Conference, and our WWDC news hub is collecting all of our coverage in one place.

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 13, macOS 10.15, watchOS 6, and tvOS 13 at WWDC. There’s also the possibility of new hardware in the form of a Mac Pro and an external display. Stay tuned to 9to5Mac for all the news from San Jose and from the keynote on Monday, June 3rd at 10 am PT/1 pm ET.

  • Mac Pro and display available for demo at WWDC Pro Studio in San Jose
  • Tim is back on stage to wrap things up, all developer betas coming today – public betas for iOS, macOS, and iPadOS available in July. Public general releases in the fall.
  • Native framework for building Apple Watch apps as well
  • Demo time for SwiftUI framework, getting major applause from developers in attendance. Live updating interactive window, read more details here
  • SwiftUI framework: an all-new declarative UI framework using Swift code. New interactive framework in Xcode.
  • Demo time: Minecraft Earth, point at other person and see their name and tool, use motion capture to animate characters, essentially lets you exist in Minecraft.
  • ARKit adds support for movement around people and People Occlusion, allowing developers to put virtual content in front or behind people. Motion capture is done in real-time using device camera
  • RealityKit: Complex 3D environments with drag and drop tools for creating 3D/AR features with massive library of pre-existing objects and animations. Reality Composer also announced for creating AR environments.
  • Atlassian on stage to demonstrate JIRA Cloud on the Mac using Catalyst
  • Twitter coming back to the Mac with Catalyst-based application
  • Apple has been working with developers on Catalyst, including GameLoft for Asphalt racing game
  • Catalyst is available to developers today, available in Xcode. Xcode automatically builds in necessary Mac features when you tick the “Mac” box. One development team can build a single app that spans from iPhone to iPad to Mac
  • 100M active installed base for Macs,
  • Project Catalyst is the official name of Marzipan, Apple’s technology for porting iPad applications to the Mac
  • Screen Time comes to the Mac, as well as new Photos experience, gallery view in Notes, all-new Reminders app
  • Activation Lock comes to Macs with T2 chips
  • “Find My” combines Find My Friends and Find My Friends. It is available on macOS and iOS, works even when a Mac isn’t connected to WiFi. A device will send out a Bluetooth beach using mesh networks of other iOS and Mac devices. Completely anonymous.
  • macOS 10.15 adds Voice Control as an Accessibility feature, lets you control your Mac entirely with your voice. Also supported on iOS.
  • macOS 10.15 includes Sidecar, allowing you to use your iPad as a second display for your Mac. Wireless or wired. Supports Apple Pencil for input.

  • New TV app supports 4K HDR playback on “recent Macs”
  • Podcasts app on Mac supports cross-device sync for podcast playback, search support using machine learning to search the actual content of podcasts
  • New Music app has “all the powerful features” you expect, in an all-new interface. Improved experience for syncing, no more pop ups when you plug in a phone
  • Craig back on stage to talk about iTunes and splitting it into three apps: Music, TV, and Podcasts
  • Now time for macOS: macOS 10.15 Catalina
  • The new Mac Pro starts at $5999 for 8-core, 32GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. Available this fall.
  • Pro Display XDR $4999 or $5999 for nano-textured version. The stand is available for an additionally $999.
  • Features Pro Stand design, counterbalancing arm that makes it feel “virtually weightless,” tilt and height adjustment. Rotation for portrait mode
  • It’s called the Pro Display XDR, 15-inch MacBook Pro supports two displays, new Mac Pro supports six displays
  • Rear of display acts as a heat sink, extracting heat from each LED. The display can retain 1000 nits of full screen brightness indefinitely, 1600 nits peak
  • “HDR at a level never seen before” – new backlighting system that uses a large array of blue LEDs for brightness, custom lenses and reflectors shape and control the light
  • Industry-leading anti-reflective coating, as well as anti-reflective coating option
  • Over 20 million pixels, 218 pixels per per inch, P3 wide color, reference modes built-in, supersede viewing angle
  • 32-inch Retina 6K display with a resolution of 6016×3384
  • New display to go with the Mac Pro
  • Apple says the new Mac Pro was designed with easy access to its components. There are stainless steel handles for modularity, all internal components mount to the frame with 360-degree components.
  • 300 watts of power, runs fully unconstrained
  • 2933MHz ECC memory, 12 DIMM slots
  • 8 internal PCI slots, four double-wide slots, three single side slots
  • Half-length slot populated with two TB3 ports, audio jack, two USB A ports, two 10Gb Ethernet ports
  • Up to 1.5 terabytes of RAM
  • Intel Xeon processor with up to 28 cores
  • Apple designed a PCI connector with a second PCIe connector and power
  • Multiple graphics options; can configure with options such as Radeon Pro Vega II
  • Two GPUs connected via Infinity Fabric Link, 5X faster than PCI bust
  • Apple built a brand new card called Afterburner for video editing, 6 billion pixels per second. 3 streams of 8K, 12 streams of 4K
  • Working with partners such as Adobe, Blackmagic, as well as internal teams like Final Cut Pro and Logic
  • Mac Pro time!
  • Demo time, showcasing new gestures on iPad. New QuickType gesture keyboard supported with floating keyboard
  • Apple Pencil improvements: reduced latency from 20ms to 9ms, new annotation interface, PencilKit API for third-party applications
  • New three-finger swipe gesture for undo, no more shaking your iPad
  • Improved gestures for moving cursor, selecting text, and more. 30 new keyboard shortcuts as well. Can grab the scroll indicator to move quickly within a file
  • Ability to download fonts directly from the App Store
  • Download Manager now available in Safari
  • “Desktop-class browsing” to Safari on iPad: Safari requests desktop site, sized perfectly for iPad display. Automatically optimized for touch input. Apps like Google Docs, WordPress, and Squarespace now work “perfect” in Safari
  • Files improvements: Shared iCloud folders, support for external drive, and connecting directly to a camera
  • App Expose now on iPad, can see all instances of an app. Works for third-party apps and Apple apps, different “spaces” for organizing windows and apps
  • Multi-window capability for apps on iPad, such as having two instances of Notes side by side
  • Slide over apps now fan out, making it easier to switch between different applications in slide over
  • Pin widgets to Home screen, tighter grid of icons
  • iPadOS time!
  • Neural Text To Speech: More natural Siri voice with improved cadence
  • Siri Shortcuts now built-in to iOS with support for new multi-step shortcuts and suggested automations
  • CarPlay updates: New dashboard design, all-new Music app and less intrusive Siri interface. Siri now works with third-party applications such as Waze and Pandora in CarPlay
  • HomePod voice recognition: HomePod will know who is talking and personalize its responses
  • Handoff – Easily hand off music from your iPhone to HomePod
  • New AirPods features: Announce messages and reply instantly using Siri
  • New “Photos” tab in the Photos app, easy to scroll by years, months, days, and all. You can scroll through individual days to see all photos taken on a certain day. Same for months and years. Organizes by events as well, such as birthdays and trips.
  • Photos now removes clutter such as duplications, better organization to “crate a diary of your life”
  • Brand new Photo editing experiences, easy to access controls such as Saturation, highlights, contrast, vibrance, white balance, and much more. Also works with videos, and you can now rotate a video directly in the Photos app
  • Camera and Photos: New Portrait Lighting options, can adjust the lighting effects – increase intensity smoothes skin for example
  • Memoji stickers for Messages, as well as in the system keyboard for other third-party apps
  • New Memoji options for makeup, accessories, and more
  • New security camera privacy protections in HomeKit: HomeKit Secure Video. The video is analyzed on your resident iPad, HomePod, or Apple TV. Then it is sent to Apple where no one can see it.
  • Apple launches “Sign in with Apple” as alternative to signing into services with Google and Facebook. Authentication via Face ID. Platforms can request access to email address, but you can hide it and Apple will create a fake random email that forwards to your real address
  • New Privacy options for sharing location with third-party apps: Allow just once, Background tracking Alerts, WiFi and Bluetooth protections
  • Share ETA in Maps to quickly send ETA to friends via Messages
  • Google Maps-like “Look Around” feature that gives you a 3D street level view of locations, smoothly move down the street to view stores and more
  • New launch screen in Apple Maps with favorites, collections for organizing favorites and creating shareable lists, organizing trips
  • All-new Apple Maps rolling out to the entire United States by the end of 2019
  • All-new Reminders app, rewritten from the ground up. Just type what you want and Reminders will know when and where to notify you, attach photos, Smart Lists, Tasks
  • Safari has per website preferences, Mail supports rich fonts
  • Dark Mode in Music app, live lyrics support as well
  • Redesigned share sheet with suggestions, easier to share things with one tap
  • New swipe keyboard built-in to iOS

  • New Health app design on iOS: summary view, favorites, highlights. Uses machine learning to present certain highlights to you.
  • Cycle Tracking also available without a Watch via the Health app on iOS
  • Cycle Tracking – New app to help learn more about your menstrual cycle, regularities, and more. Gives you a simple and discreet way to visualize your cycle on your wrist.
  • Noise tracking support to help protect hearing health; designed with privacy in mind, “Apple doesn’t record or save your audio”
  • New Health features in watchOS 6: Activity Trends for tracking activity over time, 9 key metrics compared over 90 days vs 365 days. Trends for move, exercise, and stand, as well as walking pace, stairs, and more
  • Apple Health VP Sumbul Desai on stage to talk Health
  • Standalone App Store with support for downloading and purchasing watchOS apps directly from Apple Watch
  • Extended Runtime APIs for developers, as well as a new Streaming Audio API
  • Now possible to create apps that run completely independently on the Apple Watch, no need for a companion iPhone app
  • New apps: Apple Books for Audiobooks, Voice Memos, and Calculator with built-in tip calculators and bill split support
  • Taptic times: audible chime and slight tap on your wrist on the hour
  • New faces: gradients, digital face, California dial, large numerals, redesigned solar face
