Review: Moshi’s Spatia brings timeless design to a large, decor-worthy AirPlay speaker

Moshi Spatia

Apple’s AirPlay wireless audio protocol didn’t really take off in standalone speakers, but that doesn’t mean every company has abandoned it. Moshi’s Spatia, which recently launched after first being unveiled at CES 2015, relies on AirPlay for wirelessly streaming and playing audio from iTunes and iOS devices. Spatia packs five dedicated drivers and two amplifiers behind a fabric speaker cover to deliver impressive sound within a standout design. AirPlay has some well-known benefits and issues, so is it worth investing $399 in a speaker that depends on Apple’s sometimes-shaky technology?

Review: Moshi’s VersaCover for iPad Air 2 uses pyramid power to prop up your tablet

versacover-1

Several months after the iPad Air 2 hit shelves, form-fitting cases still remain few and far between, and even our favorite case makers have been rushing out “quick fix” options reusing most of earlier, thicker iPad Air 1 designs. Moshi’s VersaCover for iPad Air 2 ($60) is different.

While the “origami cover” front lid is identical to one that was used in the same-named iPad Air 1 case, the rear shell has been redesigned to precisely fit the more slender iPad Air 2’s form. If you’re looking for a super-thin iPad folio with mature textures, colors, and stand functionality, it’s worth considering.

Review: iLynx 3 changes the shape and feature set of Moshi’s flagship Mac USB hub

ilynx3-1

Accessing a Mac’s rear-facing ports can be a hassle, particularly when you’re using short cables. To eliminate that issue, Moshi’s original iLynx combined four USB 2.0 and two FireWire 400 ports into a triangular hub designed primarily to sit in front of an iMac. Later, a cosmetically near-identical sequel called iLynx 800 modestly updated the accessory by updating the ports to FireWire 800.

With FireWire dead and USB 3.0 growing in popularity, there’s a new iLynx in town. iLynx 3 ($60) drops FireWire entirely in favor of an all-USB approach, relying on a combination of USB and wall power to connect up to four devices to your Mac. Read on for the details.

CES 2015: Moshi launches chic new AirPlay speaker Spatia

spatia-spatia-airplay-speaker-3970

Although Apple’s AirPlay wireless speaker technology has pretty much faded out of public view, there are still companies producing new designs to support the standard. Moshi today announced Spatia, a particularly attractive design combining respectable speakers, amplifiers, and fancy external materials including metallic and fabric accents. Standard AirPlay features such as lossless audio streaming and router-free Wi-Fi Direct are included, enabling Spatia to operate independently or on an existing Wi-Fi network.

The all-in-one system contains twin 1-inch tweeters, two 2.75-inch drivers, and a 4-inch downward-firing subwoofer, notably in a housing with a stand that keeps all of the speakers floating above the surface of a table. Moshi hasn’t compromised on the audio processing hardware, either, as it includes two DSP chips and two Class-D amplifiers to separately drive the high/mid and low frequencies. Audio can be adjusted by a Spatia speaker app, downloaded for free from the App Store. Moshi has not yet announced pricing or an availability date for the speaker.

Review: Moshi’s uber-strong USB Cable with Lightning connector

1

Every Lightning cable starts with the same three parts: a Lightning plug, a USB plug, and a wire to connect them together. The thickness and materials differ, and there may be questions about the reliability of the parts, but the general rule is: if you’ve seen one Lightning cable, you’ve seen them all. Yet Moshi’s USB Cable with Lightning Connector ($25 retail, $22 Amazon Black and White) doesn’t look like any other cable you’ve seen. Although it’s functionally nearly identical to Apple’s standard Lightning to USB Cable, it’s also unique in three ways…

The best iPhone 5c (and iPhone 5s) cases already available online

Site default logo image

A small surprise yesterday during Apple’s introduction of the new iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s was the launch of new cases for the devices. The iPhone 5s gets a new leather case in six colors, and the 5c gets colourful silicone cases with small circular cutouts meant to show off the iPhone’s color underneath. The silicone 5c cases don’t seem to be getting the best response following yesterday’s unveiling, but the good news is there are already several reputable case manufacturers with cases available for both the iPhone 5c and 5s.

Screen Shot 2013-09-11 at 2.39.53 PMThe biggest complaint (apart from comparisons to crocs) seems to be lack of attention to detail, highlighted best in the image of the “iPhone” text to the right.  If Apple’s new cases won’t cut it, below we’ve put together a roundup of the best cases from around the web that are already available to order and coming soon for the launch of the device later this month.
