With Apple Pencil and iPad Pro, users can create a new note from the lock screen by simply tapping the screen with the Pencil. However, there’s a slightly less elegant, but useful way to access Notes from non-Apple Pencil enabled iPads or your iPhone.
I’m really good at managing my inbox (for personal email at least) and rarely leave messages there for keeping. Most emails go in a receipt folder or get deleted, I aggressively unsubscribe to mailing lists and mark spam as junk, and special messages are archived for keeping.
Occasionally I’ll have a message with important information that I don’t need right now and will want to easily reference in the near future. I’ve tried flagging but I don’t entirely understand how the feature is supposed to work between iOS and the Mac.

If you’re currently experiencing issues with iCloud Mail or Notes, then you’re not alone. Apple is currently reporting an ongoing iCloud outage affecting a small percentage of users (which is probably still a lot of people at Apple’s scale) when sending and receiving email with iCloud Mail or using iCloud Notes.
Apple has officially released the OS X 10.11.4 El Capitan update through the Mac App Store. The software update is available for all Macs capable of running OS X 10.11. The Mac update delivers new features including Live Photo viewing and sharing through iMessage using the Messages app as well as secure password support for individual notes in the Notes app.
Following a lengthy beta period, Apple has now released iOS 9.3 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iOS 9.3 is a significant feature update for Apple’s mobile operating system, with brand new additions like Night Shift, Touch ID Notes and more. iOS 9.3 runs on every iOS 9-capable device, including the brand new iPhone SE. The update appears to weigh in at a hefty 1.7 gigabytes.

This week’s iOS 9.3 beta software update for iPhone and iPad is a pretty major release for a mid-cycle version. New features including the F.lux-like Night Shift which lets you change the color temperature of your display and Touch ID plus secure passwords for Notes feel more major version features. Google’s iPhone and iPad note capturing app is out with a feature update today in the latest version. Keep users can now add an app widget to the Today view in Notification Center for capturing material in the app from anywhere with a swipe down.
iOS users can also add a new Keep extension using the latest update for sending websites and other information to Keep without opening it and leaving the app you’re already in. Finally, the new version lets Keep users copy notes with Google Docs for the first time.
Google Keep lets you capture notes using labels and colors as well as photography and images on-the-go. Keep also supports capturing voice memos and making lists that backup and sync to your Google account. The new iOS widget lets you jump right into the app to create new note, lists, photos, and voice memos.
After only being available on Android for a couple years, Google brought Keep to iPhone and iPad just a few weeks ago. Download the latest version of Google Keep from the App Store to use the new features for free.
Evernote just announced an update to its iPhone and iPad apps that brings the ability to sketch in notes, which should make many users happy as the company points out the feature is one of its most-requested (and one it’s long had on Android).
Using your finger or a stylus like the Evernote edition of the Adonit Jot Script or Apple Pencil, users can now sketch inside of notes. And for users of the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus with 3D Touch, the feature will allow you to “change the line weight just by adjusting your writing pressure.”
Sketches, like everything else, sync across platforms so you can view and continue to edit on another iOS or Android device. And the feature includes handwriting recognition, so you’ll be able to search for text you’ve written inside notes.

Google today announced that it’s bringing its Google Keep note taking app to iPhone and iPad for the first time after originally releasing only for web and Android users a couple years back.

PSA for the chefs and food enthusiasts: Evernote is taking its Food app completely out of service next month. Evernote Food, which used the Evernote syncing service but focused on capturing and storing recipes and photos of meals, will no longer be available for download at the end of next month.
Evernote is also stopping sync support for Food as it takes the app out of its portfolio, instead pointing users to the main Evernote app and the service’s Web Clipper feature.

Evernote Food will stop working starting September 30th so users will need to sync their content up with the service before then. Recipes and photos within the app won’t go away, but Evernote will no longer sync it with the service. Evernote’s main app for iOS users is available from the App Store. Users affected can follow this transition guide to ensure no data is lost.
Microsoft today released a new update to OneNote for iPhone that makes it a universal app, now OneNote for iOS. That means that the existing OneNote for iPad app is being replaced by a single, universal app that runs on both iPhone and iPad.
The benefit, aside from having a single version, is that the iPad app is gaining some recent features introduced in the iPhone app including a OneNote widget in the today view of Notification Center. iPad users will also notice a new “recent notes” section for notes made on either device, and landscape mode on the iPad now presents a column of page previews.

Apple announced today that a new version of its Notes application will be coming with iOS 9. The update will allow users to add photos and checklists to their notes, along with text formating features for creating headers and and other common formats.
Users can also add hand-drawn sketches, and import images and links through a sharing extension.
The main list view will also allow users to view image thumbnails for their images, allowing them to quickly find what they’re looking for.
