Opinion: Apple is right to stand firm on encryption however much terrorist attacks ramp up the pressure

iphone-6s-3d-touch

Nobody who watched the news coverage of the terrorist attacks in Paris could fail to be moved by the scenes and the stories emerging from it. It was undeniably a horrific series of events, and it’s only human nature to want action to be taken to reduce the likelihood of future such atrocities.

But there is always a danger at such times that emotion, rather than rational thought, will drive government policy-making. I won’t get into the broader theme there, as there are more appropriate forums for that, but there is one aspect that is very much on-topic for us: the battle between Apple and governments over encryption.

There have already been unattributed reports that the terrorists in Paris used encrypted communication. I have no idea whether there is any specific evidence for that, but it would hardly be damning were such evidence to emerge: it would be frankly astonishing if they hadn’t.

There are three reasons why Apple is right to maintain that it will continue to offer end-to-end encrypted communication no matter how much governments in the USA, UK and elsewhere may protest …

Mount your iPhone 6 inside any car with Logitech’s new Protection+ case

logitech-protection-plus-iphone-6-case

The overhauled design of iPhone 6 has slowed third party accessory makers to a crawl. We’ve seen a variety of docks and ultra-thin cases from smaller outfits, but name-brand companies are taking an exceptionally long time to bring iPhone 6/Plus accessories to market. Originally released for the iPhone 5/5s, Logitech has retooled its Protection+ case for iPhone 6:

Protection+ for iPhone 6 uses shock-absorbent polymers in each of the corners of the case to better absorb the the force of drops and bumps. This corner protection along with an inner TPR layer and impact channels (seen along the backside), work together to offer military-grade drop protection.

But it’s more than just a protective case. There’s a built-in metal plate on the rear of the case that enables Protection+ to seamlessly integrate with Logitech+ magnetic mounts. We had a chance to use a similar magnetic mount during our Case+ review and found that it provided a rock-solid connection.

The iPhone 6 Protection+ case is now available preorder in four different color combinations for $34.99. So far there’s no word on whether or not an iPhone 6 Plus version is in the pipeline, but don’t fret because we’ve already tracked down a couple compatible mounts. All of our other favorite iPhone 6/Plus cases can be found in this roundup.
