Apple, Asus, netbooks on the mind

You got to admit it, one person you never want to take on in a Poker game would have to be Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, surely?

Think about it.

This man is one of the most accomplished truth deflectors in the business – we’re not saying he doesn’t tell the truth, he does, he’s pretty much always honest, he’s just good, really, really good at saying truthful things which make listeners think they hear the opposite of what he says

Remember Steve Jobs on enabling video playback for iPods, when he was so often heard to say, “the iPod is for listening to music, it’s not designed for video.”

Mossberg comes out (yet again) against the US mobile cartel

You have to admire Walt Mossberg for taking his position as grand exalted leader amongst technology journalists directly to the US telecoms.  He is single handedly trying to break the hold on consumers that the Sprint/Tmobile/AT&T/Verizon Cartel has on the US Mobile industry.  To his credit, he has gotten Verizon to promise that in Q3 2008, that it will accept any device on its platform – as long as it meets a very simple set of requirements (like no VoIP?).  If he were running for Office, we’d vote for him.

Microsoft Bowing Out of the Mac Platform? Could Office 2008 Be the Last from Microsoft?

MacWindows The resignation of Roz Ho as General Manager of the Macintosh Business Unit before WWDC 2007 should have been a premonition of Microsoft’s incredibly poor showing at the event (either that or she knew how painfully lame it was going to be). It had been speculated that Redmond would announce the distribution of the new 2008 version of its market dominating Office suite at the event.  But Microsoft had nothing to announce. Is this a sign of things to come?  When will it get released and will Office 2008 be the last upgrade to Office that the Mac sees?  Are Bill and Steve not getting along as well as they appear to be with Walt Mossberg?

Mossberg claims Snow Leopard upgrade can upgrade Tiger systems sans Leopard…

Wall Street Journal technology correspondent, Walt Mossberg, is claiming that Snow Leopard will install on Macs running the previous Tiger OS without requiring installation of Leopard, contrary to Apple’s previous claims.

“For owners of Intel-based Macs who are still using the older Tiger version of the Mac OS, Apple is officially making Mac OS X Snow Leopard available only in a “boxed set” that includes other software and costs $169,” Mossberg explains.

Your Snow Leopard versus Windows 7 price comparison guide

Mac OS X 10.6 ‘Snow Leopard’ already occupies two of the top three spots in Amazon’s software sales lists, but battle between Microsoft and Apple isn’t solely over technological superiority, but also over price.

Apple has already told Leopard users it will sell them Mac OS X version 10.6 Snow Leopardfor just $29, rising to just $49 for Snow Leopard Family Pack (5-User).

There’s no introductory offer, not complex licensing arrangements – the price is what you see.

Not so for Microsoft, who appears to be hoping Windows 7 will be better-received than its previous attempt at a modern OS, Vista. Industry insiders pointed to Vista’s tiered and complex pricing system as rationale for poor market reception of the software, but it looks like Microsoft plans to repeat its own mistake – once again too many prices and bundles will complicate the buying experience.

Walt Mossberg talks Windows XP -> Windows 7 Update

"It will be frustrating, tedious and labor-intensive.   In fact, the process will be so painful that, for many XP users, the easiest solution may be to buy a new PC preloaded with Windows 7[or Mac?], if they can afford such a purchase in these dire economic times. In fact, that’s the option Microsoft (MSFT) recommends for XP users. (Conveniently, this option also helps Microsoft’s partners that make PCs.)"
