Amazon Web Services causing outages to the company’s Alexa service, among others

Amazon on Friday is having issues with its cloud-based “Amazon Web Services” system that is causing outages on several major platforms including the company’s own Alexa service.

Several large companies such as Amazon, Google, and Apple have been heavily relying on cloud infrastructure for their services for several years now. Any major outage can interrupt service for thousands, if not millions of users worldwide.

Amazon first acknowledged the issue at 10:30AM ET on Friday, according to CNBC.

“We are investigating increased packet loss possibly impacting some AWS Direct Connect customers in the US-East-1 Region.”

Direct Connect is one of the hundreds of services available from Amazon’s AWS platform. It “can reduce your network costs, increase bandwidth throughput, and provide a more consistent network experience than Internet-based connections,” according to the AWS website.

The issue seems to be with Amazon’s US-East-1 data centers, which has been available to customers for several years. A list of services that are experiencing outages has not yet been confirmed, but Amazon’s Alexa seems to be effected.
