Adobe combats Aperture with Lightroom 2.0

Days since Apple’s release of Aperture 2.1 with its new-found support for plug-ins from third-party developers, Adobe has hit back with the release of a free public beta of its in-development professional photography application, Photoshop Lightroom 2.0.

Photographers are being invited to download and use a 30-day limited time version of the software. Customers who already own a registered copy of Lightroom will be able to use the beta software until August 31.

Key features within the upgrade include dual-monitor support, localised dodge and burn tools and – and it’s a big and – support for 64-bit computing on Mac OS X and Vista.

15 Billion dollars, Apple? Someone is doing some Christmas shopping

So it came out last week that Apple had been saving a bit of money.  They are likely going to buy something and the internet blew up with ideas on what that should be.  Ars came up with Adobe, Tivo, Nintendo.  We aren’t feeling any of those – here’s why:

  • Adobe – there is too much overlap in products.  Final Cut/Premiere.  Aperture/Lightroom, etc, etc.  Adobe has a great portfolio of applications but overall the line isn’t close enough to Apple’s core competency.  Plus the two companies aren’t getting along that well anymore.  Adobe is also pricey.
  • Tivo – It is a great technology for the next 3-5 years.  Soon though, networks will be broadcasting their content over the net by themselves.  The technology to leverage advertising will make them more than the currently falling costs of broadcasting over the net – so it won’t matter.  As someone who has to watch college football on a slingbox, I say hurry the fsck up.
  • Nintendo – great idea, but they are too expensive.  Any buyout of Nintendo would have to be more like a merger.  Can you see Steve Jobs agreeing to a merger and taking in top management?  Us neither.

So, we’ve come up with three companies that Apple should buy – and which they actually have a shot at.  Yep, telecoms:

Apple Hot News links to Snow Leopard shots

Some editor at the Apple Hot News website has a bit of a sense of humor.  They detail a National Geograhic photographer whose focus is…wait for it….

Snow Leopards.

At the very least all of us bloggers will have some stunning pictures to use when referring to Apple’s new operating system.  Beautiful work from Steve Winter:

When National Geographic photographer Steve Winter reviewed his Snow Leopard images in Aperture, he was literally seeing them for the very first time. Knowing Snow Leopards to be notoriously camera shy, Winter set up 14 camera traps to capture remotely the photos selected for the recent National Geographic article and gallery — just a small sample of the 30,000 he edited and processed in Aperture.

Plex media center adds Aperture support, continues to shine

Plex.app hits .71 release this week and continues its ascent to the top of the Apple media center world.  Sure, Frontrow is blessed by Apple.  Boxee has lifted the same XBMC code and gone a different direction.  But, as far as fully funtioning Media Centers go, Plex.app is easily the best, and getting better fast.

This latest update adds support for Aperture library browsing (iPhoto and iTunes has been supported for months).  Not just your Aperture either…but any Aperture out there on the Internet so long as everyone is using Plex.  Support for Adobe’s Lightroom is also on the way.

Recent features include the ability to open any application from Plex’s interface (including FrontRow), iTunes visualizers and playback of DRM tracks from the iTunes store and Sparkle software updates.
