Apple Stores kicking off free Hour of Code sessions next week, new Swift Coding Club materials now available

Apple has today announced that it will be bringing its coding curriculum to the Computer Science Education Week. Starting today, students can register for thousands of free Hour of Code sessions available at all Apple Store locations worldwide. The sessions will begin December 1st and run through 14th.

Apple Stores to teach Swift Playgrounds lessons at free Hour of Code workshops starting December 5 [U]

Apple’s annual Hour of Code workshops are kicking off this year at Apple Stores across the world during the week of December 5, and this year there’s a new app in play: Swift Playgrounds. Apple introduced user-friendly coding app for iPad earlier this year as a way to introduce new developers to Swift, Apple’s programming language.

Craig Federighi promotes Hour of Code workshops, saying programming is “the next level of literacy”

In an interview to promote Apple’s Hour of Code workshops for kids aged 6 and up, SVP of software engineering Craig Federighi has told the BBC that introducing young children to programming is so important because programming is “the next level of literacy.”

“These devices are so much a part of our lives, we have a computer in some form wherever we go, that the ability to create in that medium is as fundamental as the ability to write,” he said […]

He says programming should be seen as a “language and a way of thinking”. And while many young people have a great facility in using devices, he says being able to programme them is the “next level of literacy”.

Federighi, who first began to experiment with code when he was ten years old, said that Apple also wanted to dispel one of the myths of life as a software engineer …

Apple opens registrations for this year’s ‘Hour of Code’, free programming workshops for kids age 6+

Apple has opened registrations for this year’s ‘Hour of Code’ workshops, providing kids aged six and up with a free one-hour introduction to the basics of computer programming. The workshops take place at Apple Stores around the world on December 10th, and this will be the third year running that the company has offered them.

Hour of Code is a fun one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anyone can learn the basics of programming.

Like last year, the company is also holding a number of special events in support of Computer Science Education Week and Code.org …

Apple offers free 1-hour computer science workshops for kids & teens

As part of a code.org initiative to get people started with programming, U.S. Apple Stores are offering a free one-hour computer science workshop aimed at children and teens. The workshops take place in Apple retail stores on Wednesday 11th December.
