Mystery solved: Apple vans gathering next-gen Maps data, grabbing Street View storefronts + 3D images

Site default logo image

Apple Van

Three years after Apple launched its own iOS Maps app to replace Google as its iPhone and iPad map provider, the Cupertino company is readying its first major enhancements to the service. While Apple was known to be gearing up for the launch of a mass transit directions service this fall in a handful of cities, sources have revealed that it is also developing its first entirely in-house mapping database to reduce its reliance on TomTom, using a fleet of mysterious vans to take still photos of business storefronts to replace Yelp photos, and building a 3D Street View feature. Apple has been using the sensor-equipped vans in cities such as Los Angeles, Dallas, and New York since earlier this year, and, below, we detail how the vehicles are advancing Apple’s plans for the future of Maps…

Google introduces competitors to Apple Pay, Photos, HomeKit + new iOS apps at I/O

Site default logo image

Google-I-O-2015

Google just wrapped up the opening keynote for its I/O developer conference taking place this week, and not surprisingly many of the announced products and services are direct competitors to Apple’s. Android Pay gets an official coming out party to compete with Apple Pay, Project Brillo is Google’s answer to HomeKit, and the new Android M gets a focus on quality, much like what Apple has in store for iOS 9 at WWDC in June. The company also announced a new Photos app with unlimited photo and video syncing and iOS support, as well as a number of other iOS app announcements.

Head below for a roundup of everything Google announced today from 9to5Google:

Apple’s ‘Proactive’ to take on Google Now with deep iOS 9 search, Augmented Reality Maps, Siri API

Site default logo image

Spotlight

After several years of quiet development, Apple is readying a major new iOS initiative codenamed “Proactive,” which will leverage Siri, Contacts, Calendar, Passbook, and third-party apps to create a viable competitor to Google Now for Android devices. Like Google Now, Proactive will automatically provide timely information based on the user’s data and device usage patterns, but will respect the user’s privacy preferences, according to sources familiar with Apple’s plans.

As an evolution of iOS’s Spotlight search feature, Proactive is the fruit of a long-term initiative that involved the acquisition of small app developers, and integration of core iOS apps. It will also work with Apple’s Maps application to display personally relevant points of interest using an augmented reality interface, and integrate with a third-party Siri API codenamed “Breadcrumbs”…

Less than 24 hours after a report surfaced revealing Scott Forstall began serving as an advisor to Snapchat last year, the former iOS chief has announced via his Twitter account an unrelated project: a Broadway musical.

I’m thrilled to be co-producing the Broadway musical Fun Home opening this Sunday. Bravo to the phenomenal team!

The announcement is especially notable as it marks the first time the former Apple executive has surfaced in public since his ousting at Apple under current CEO Tim Cook in late 2012.

The additions are noted on the portal, while Apple has also begun emailing users. Business listing updates can take about a week. Apple first launched the service in the U.S. last October, expanded it to the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and Singapore in January, and brought it to Canada, France & Germany in February. Sketchy new rumor claims Apple is planning to ‘give Tesla a run for its money’

Site default logo image

Remember those minivans driving around San Francisco with cameras on top that were reportedly leased to Apple? Well, a new rumor coming from Business Insider claims that the site was contacted by an Apple employee who says the company is planning a project that will “give Tesla a run for its money.”

Tesla, of course, is the electronic auto maker who is currently waging an employee-poaching war with Apple (and winning, for now). What exactly this means is unclear at the moment, but it would appear that this employee is insinuating that Apple is working on some sort of vehicle that is either electric, self-driving, or both.

Camera-equipped minivan leased to Apple spotted in Bay Area may point to Street View-style mapping system

Site default logo image

van1

Apple may be preparing a big update to its Maps application for iOS and OS X. San Francisco’s KPIX reported earlier today that a Dodge Caravan sporting an impressive array of cameras has been spotted roaming the area. The California DMV confirmed that the vehicle (seen in the photos above and below, via Claycord) was leased to Apple.

The CBS affiliate reached out to technology analyst Rob Enderle for his thoughts on what this might be. Enderle said that this van simply has too many cameras (a whopping twelve of them) to be a mapping car—though he failed to note that Google uses even more cameras on its own Street View cars.

Video and more photos after the break…

Google iOS app updated w/ Material Design, Street View integration, more

Site default logo image

Google is rolling out a completely redesigned version of its iPhone and iPad app with its Material Design look and feel right down to the app icon.

The latest version of the search app now presents a bottom navigation bar (which can slide out of view) that presents a persistent Google button for searching for new information. The navigation bar also offers a button for quickly accessing recent search pages, something that feels similar to multitasking between apps on Android.

Also notable as part of the redesign is the optimization searching for photos has received. In the latest version of Google’s iOS app, image results now take on a full-screen, mosaic look for presenting larger results. The update also packs in deep Google Maps integration for location searches including support for Google Street View right in the app for iPhone users. You can read the full change log below:

Did Apple drop Google Maps for good? Apple Maps now rolling out on iCloud.com

Site default logo image

Apple-Maps-Find-My-iPhone-01

Apple appears to have finally dropped Google Maps from iCloud.com, replacing it with its own in-house maps almost two years after removing Google Maps from iOS and most of its other products. Apple started slowly rolling out the feature to its iCloud beta site for select users earlier this year before pulling it, but it now seems to have replaced Google for all users of iCloud.com’s Find My iPhone feature (pictured above).

Apple continues to beef up Maps data with addition of ten new providers

Screen Shot 2014-11-19 at 8.33.12 PM

Apple has continued its recent efforts to improve its mapping service by partnering with several new data providers, according to Apple Maps Marketing. The company has historically partnered with companies like TomTom, as well as its own in-house mapping data and others for its information.

These new companies don’t yet appear on the list of map data attributions, Apple is recommending businesses who wish to submit bulk locations to be listed in its Maps app instead go through one of the company’s partners, including these ten new names:

  • DAC Group
  • Location3 Media
  • Marquette Group
  • Placeable
  • PositionTech
  • SIM Partners
  • SinglePlatform
  • UBL
  • Yext
  • Yodle

This list isn’t a complete representation of Apple’s partners, and even the full list in the email to inquiring businesses (which includes previously-known partners) doesn’t include every single one of Apple’s providers, but the above ten companies certainly appear to be brand new additions to the lineup.
