Disney+ plans for growth through ad-based tier as Netflix boosts accessibility features

Between Disney+ and Netflix, many subscribers are getting more of what they want – a cheaper price with Disney and more features with Netflix. Back in March, Disney announced it will release a cheaper, ad-supported plan later this year on Disney+. With over 100 million subscribers worldwide, the company is anticipating the majority of its users will move to this plan.

In a note to shareholders, Netflix reports that its revenue growth has “slowed considerably”. This news comes after losing 200,000 subscribers last quarter and potentially two million this current quarter. The streaming giant is navigating fierce competition with other services as well as having over 40% of its user base being unpaid subscribers.

Netflix is ramping up its efforts to crack down on the age-old practice of password sharing. As first announced by the company in a blog post, Netflix is beginning to test a new add-on option for customers that lets people “easily and securely” share their password with people outside of their house, but at the cost of “paying a bit more.”

Mark Gurman at Bloomberg has reported as part of his Power On newsletter that Netflix is planning to release its mobile games on iOS individually through the App Store. Developer Steve Moser shared the information with Bloomberg after discovering code in the Netflix app that points to an interesting solution to get around Apple’s rules.
